GRANVILLE, Ohio (May 14, 2023) – The No. 13 Denison University men's lacrosse team saw its 2023 season come to an end as the Big Red fell to the No. 11 nationally-ranked University of Lynchburg by a final score of 14-8 during the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Denison fell behind 4-0 after the first quarter and ultimately trailed 7-0 after a goal by Lynchburg with 9:50 left in the second quarter.
Denison did outshoot Lynchburg 10-7 in the first quarter and won four of five faceoffs, but committed five turnovers compared to zero turnovers in the opening period for the Hornets.
Will Kenney scored the first goal for Denison with 7:16 left in the first half before the Hornets went ahead by a score of 9-1 with five minutes left until halftime.
The Big Red tried to get back into it by scoring the final three goals of the first half by
Jack Sload (2:39),
Luke Fisher (1:22) and
Nate Kay (0:31).
Fisher then scored with 10:23 on the clock in the third quarter to make it a 4-0 Big Red run to cut Denison's deficit to 9-5, but the Hornets responded with three straight goals to jump back ahead by seven (12-5) with 2:57 left in the third period.
Jack Hines scored with 2:24 left in the third quarter, and then after it was 14-6 Lynchburg with nine minutes left to play, Denison's final two goals of the season came from
Clyde Bresnahan (8:43) and
Douglas Brooks (0:13).
Fisher finished with two goals while Hines, Breshnahan and Sload each had a goal and an assist.
Grant Larson was 12-for-19 on faceoffs with seven groundballs while
Zach Kasun recorded three groundballs and Brooks finished with two caused turnovers.
Denison finished its second season under Head Coach
Eric Koch with a 17-4 overall record, which is good for the fifth most wins in a single season in program history. As a team this year, the Big Red dished out a program-record 209 assists and set a program-best with a faceoff percentage of .708 percent.
Lynchburg, meanwhile, the 2015 national runner-up, improved to 15-6 and advanced to face the No. 1 team in NCAA Division III, Tufts University, in the NCAA quarterfinals.
