No. 22 women’s tennis wins final road match; battle with No. 32 Kenyon on deck

OBERLIN, Ohio (April 8, 2023) – Playing in its final road match of the regular season, the No. 22-ranked Denison University women's tennis team defeated Oberlin College 7-2 to improve to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The win also puts Denison into position to win the North Coast Athletic Conference championship if they can defeat No. 32-ranked Kenyon College in their next matchup.

Saturday's matchup for the Big Red came against a third-place Oberlin (8-7 overall, 3-2 NCAC) squad that was riding a three-match winning streak and had the benefit of playing at home, where they were 7-2 entering the day.

However, the Yeowomen were limited to only four available players and defaulted at No. 3 doubles and both No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Sydney Cianciola and Sarah Robertson grinded out an 8-6 win over Marta Laska and Anna Pastore, who are ranked No. 13 in doubles in the ITA Central Region.

In singles, the clinching win came with a close 7-6 (8-6), 7-4 win by Robertson over Pastore in the two spot.

Denison added wins of 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 by Peyton Oda (No. 4 singles) over Lydia Zaferi and 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 by Cianciola (No. 1 singles) over Laska, who is ranked No. 23 in singles in the Central Region.

The battle for the NCAC regular-season championship will commence between No. 22 Denison (14-4, 5-0) and No. 32 Kenyon (14-4, 4-0) starting at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, at the Denison Tennis Courts. The Big Red and the Owls are ranked No. 4 and No. 5 in the ITA Division III Central Region, respectively.
