No. 14 Denison handles Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio (April 25, 2023) – Playing in its first of three North Coast Athletic Conference games during a busy final week of the regular season, the No. 14 Denison University men's lacrosse team kept pace atop the conference standings with a dominating 26-3 road win at Hiram College on Tuesday night. It was a season-high in goals for the Big Red.

With the win, Denison (12-3 overall, 5-1 NCAC) remains tied with Kenyon College (14-1, 7-1) and Ohio Wesleyan University (10-4, 5-1) at the top of the NCAC standings with just one loss in conference play. The Owls, who are the fourth team receiving votes in the latest USILA/Blatant Lacrosse 2023 Men's Coaches Division III Poll, have earned at least a share of the conference regular-season title and will wait to see what the Big Red and Battling Bishops do in their final two games.

Against Hiram (5-10, 0-6) on Tuesday, Denison scored on its first possession just 39 seconds in and was off and running from there.

Denison scored on each of its first four shots, two of which came on assists by Luke Fisher, and led 4-0 less than three minutes in.

In all, Denison scored seven goals by seven different players in the first quarter.

Tommy Quinson assisted on a goal and then scored himself for the first two goals of the second quarter to make it 9-0, and then in the final 20 seconds of the period, he scored again and assisted on another goal to help make it 16-1 Big Red at halftime.

Quinson (4 goals, 2 assists) ultimately finished with six points while Fisher (1 goal, 4 assists) and Nate Kay (2 goals, 3 assists) both had five points and Ethan Tyack (2 goals, 2 assists) had four points.

With 4:25 left in the third quarter, freshman Charlie Pellegrino scored his first-career goal to make it 21-1, and fellow-freshman Macky Peck scored the final goal of the third quarter and the first goal of the fourth quarter to grow Denison's lead to as much as 24-1.

Peck's third goal of the game made it 26-3 and finished off the scoring in the final two minutes of the contest.

Clyde Bresnahan matched Peck with three goals while Will Kenney and Gavin Pappas both scored twice.

Peck also added three caused turnovers while AJ Boxler had four groundballs and Cooper Sugden had three.

Grant Larson won each of the first six faceoffs of the game and Colin MacLean made it a 10-for-10 start for the Big Red. In all, Denison won 32 of 33 faceoffs as MacLean was a perfect 13-for-13 with nine groundballs, Larson was 11-for-12 with eight groundballs, and Sam Wadsworth was 8-for-8 with four groundballs.

Lastly, all four goalies on the Big Red roster (Archer Darrach, Andrew Albert, Will Creevy, Luke Liggett) saw action in this one and made at least one save.

Next up, Denison will head to the College of Wooster (12-3 overall, 3-3 NCAC) on Thursday, April 27, as the Big Red and the Fighting Scots square off starting at 8 p.m. at Wooster High School. The game was rescheduled from its original date of April 5.
