GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 23, 2023) – Second-seeded Denison University women's tennis competed in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship match on Sunday inside the Mitchell Fieldhouse, falling to No. 1-seeded Kenyon College, 5-3, to finish their season as the conference runner-up in both the regular season and the conference tournament.
Denison's lone win in doubles came from
Monique Brual and
Caroline Lopez with an 8-5 victory over Shadia Amada Aguard and Eleni Dakos at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles,
Kendall Schrader and
Peyton Oda came up short, 8-6, in a competitive match against Natalie Connelly and Catriona MacIntosh.
Meanwhile, at No. 1 doubles,
Sarah Robertson and
Sydney Cianciola, the No. 4 ranked doubles pair in the Central Region, fell 8-2 against the No. 5-ranked duo of Allaire Berl and Eleni Lazaridou.
Then in singles, Lazaridou, ranked No. 3 in the Central Region, defeated No. 11-ranked Cianciola 6-2, 6-4 in the top spot.
Lopez followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Dakos at No. 4 singles to shrink Denison's deficit to 3-2, however, despite winning her first set against Amado Aguad, Brual came up short in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the third spot.
Competing at No. 2 singles against the No. 12-ranked singles player in the Central Region in Berl, Robertson, who is ranked No. 16 in the region, fought hard to earn a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 three-set victory and make it 4-3 overall.
However, in the final match,
Sofia Zafiropulos fell 6-1, 6-3 to MacIntosh at No. 6 singles.
Denison finishes its season at 17-6 overall while Kenyon improves to 18-4. Kenyon, who is ranked 32nd nationally, will receive the NCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
