GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 22, 2023) – For the second day in a row, the No. 19-ranked and second-seeded Denison University women's tennis team rolled past its opponent in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, this time with a 5-1 win over the third-seeded Wittenberg University Tigers in the NCAC semifinals.
Denison earned a sweep in doubles for the second day in a row as
Kendall Schrader and
Elizabeth Hoo won 8-1 in the third spot while
Caroline Lopez and
Peyton Oda (No. 2 doubles) and
Sarah Robertson and
Sydney Cianciola (No. 1 doubles) both won by a score of 8-3.
Then in singles,
Sofia Zafiropulos dominated in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles before the match had to be moved inside to the Mitchell Fieldhouse due to rain.
Once inside,
Caroline Kittle finished off a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles to clinch the victory.
Meanwhile, at No. 1 singles, Cianciola and Ashley Isaac were allowed to finish their match with national singles rankings on the line, and the result was a 6-1, 6-3 win for Isaac to allow the Tigers to avoid the shutout.
Denison improved to 17-5 overall with the win while Wittenberg fell to 10-10. In addition, it was Denison's 50th win all-time against Wittenberg (50-2) and was its 45th straight win against the Tigers since 1984.
With an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Team Championship on the line, Denison will host No. 32-ranked and top-seeded Kenyon College starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 23. During the first meeting this season between Denison and Kenyon back on April 12, it was the Owls who came out on top by a score of 6-3 over the Big Red.
