Women’s tennis honors seniors with sweep over Cardinals

women's-tennis-senior-day-2023GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 16, 2023) – On a day where the Big Red honored seniors Monique Brual, Sydney Cianciola and Sarah Robertson for their contributions to the program, No. 22 Denison University women's tennis reached the 15-win mark overall on the season after a 9-0 victory over Otterbein University on Sunday morning at the Denison Tennis Courts in Granville, Ohio.

It was the first time the Big Red reached 15 wins in the regular season since 2008 when they finished 22-4 overall, advanced to the NCAA semifinals and won the third-place match at the NCAA Championship.

It was also a matchup between a Big Red team that entered the day ranked No. 4 in the ITA Central Region and the No. 17-ranked team in the Central Region in Otterbein.

Peyton Oda and Elizabeth Hoo cruised to an 8-0 win against Julia Gillin and Rachelle Moses at No. 3 doubles to get the day started on a high note.

Then at No. 2 doubles, Brual and her sophomore partner, Caroline Lopez, also won 8-0 over Aubrey McMahon and Oliva Eckels before the senior tandem of Cianciola and Robertson finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Erin Storrer and Lillia Walter in the top spot to improve to 10-5 together at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, Lopez won 6-1, 6-2 over Moses in the No. 3 spot, Oda was victorious 6-3, 6-0 over Cassady Shough at No. 4 singles, and freshman Sofia Zafiropulos was a 6-1, 6-3 winner against McMahon in the five hole.

Matched up at No. 1 singles against Storrer, the No. 25-ranked singles player in the Central Region, Cianciola finished off her Senior Day by winning 6-3, 6-1.

At No. 6 singles against Eckels, freshman Alessandra Ceccarelli won 6-0 in the opening set but dropped a tiebreaker, 7-6 (10-8), in the second set before pulling out a 10-6 win in the third-set super tiebreaker.

Lastly, at No. 2 singles, Robertson finished her Senior Day with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Walter.

Robertson finished the regular season 10-6 in dual matches and 9-5 at the No. 2 spot while Lopez improved to 11-5 and Oda moved to 10-7.

It was the first matchup since 1995 between Otterbein (12-6 overall) and Denison, which wraps up the regular season 15-5 overall and will now make its final preparations before hosting the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament starting on Friday, April 21, and running through Sunday, April 23.

  • Monique Brual has posted career records of 36-29 in singles and 48-22 in doubles, and is 8-9 overall in singles and 14-7 overall in doubles so far this season. She currently ranks No. 25 on Denison's all-time combined career wins as well as being tied for No. 18 on the doubles career wins. In 2022, Brual was named Second-Team All-NCAC for singles after going 16-12 overall, 4-2 at No. 2 singles and 9-6 at No. 3 singles. In addition, Brual and her partner, Caroline Lopez, were also named second-team all-conference for doubles after going 11-6 in the No. 2 position.
  • Sydney Cianciola is 30-29 in singles and 49-21 in doubles for her career, including records of 11-9 overall in singles and 15-8 overall in doubles this year. She currently ranks No. 17 on Denison's all-time doubles career wins. In 2022, Sydney was First-Team All-NCAC for both singles and doubles after going 12-10 overall in singles and 19-8 overall in doubles. She is a three-time all-conference selection overall after also being named as the NCAC Newcomer of the Year and became an NCAA All-American. Cianciola was also selected to compete in the 2021 NCAA Singles Championship. Cianciola is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, a two-time member of the NCAC Academic Honor Roll, a 2022 Denison Chi Alpha Sigma Inductee, and is now a three-time Denison Top-50 Scholar-Athlete.
  • Sarah Robertson has career records of 44-32 in singles and 52-22 in doubles, and is 14-9 overall in singles and 16-8 overall in doubles so far this season. Robertson currently ranks tied for No. 21 on Denison's all-time singles career wins, No. 16 in all-time doubles career wins and No. 16 on combined career wins. In 2022, Robertson and was First-Team All-NCAC for both singles and doubles after going 18-13 overall in singles and 22-9 overall in doubles. Robertson is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, a two-time member of the NCAC Academic Honor Roll, a 2022 Denison Chi Alpha Sigma Inductee, and is now a three-time Denison Top-50 Scholar-Athlete.
