MARIETTA, Ohio (March 22, 2023) – For the second time in five days, the No. 14 Denison University baseball team traveled to Marietta, Ohio, but this time, it was to take on the No. 20-ranked Pioneers themselves. However, in the end, the Big Red fell by a final score of 9-2 on Wednesday evening at Don and Sue Schaly Field at Pioneer Park.
Denison's starting pitcher,
Will Rettig, got a 4-6-3 double play to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first inning, and from there, both pitchers remained in control until an errant throw from Rettig came back to bite him in the fifth inning.
With a runner on first and two outs for the Pioneers in the bottom of the fifth, Rettig threw over to first base one too many times, allowing the runner to move into scoring position, and then facing a full count at the plate, Marietta's leadoff hitter, Nick Bonnizzio, came through with a double to left field to bring in the first run of the game.
The Denison bats woke up in the top of the sixth inning to the tune of four base hits, matching their total through the first five innings. The big at bat came with two outs and the bases loaded as
Josh Bohn delivered a first-pitch double down the left field line to put the Big Red in front 2-1.
Rettig finished with five innings pitched allowing five hits, one run, one walk and three strikeouts, and left with the lead.
Unfortunately, Marietta answered right back with a three-run bottom of the sixth featuring three straight hits, including a two-run triple down the right field line, and a sacrifice fly to center field. All that before a five-run, six-hit bottom of the seventh inning to give the Pioneers some breathing room.
Bohn finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's to lead the Big Red offensively while
Eric Colaco was 2-for-3 and
Noah Leib and
Jake Welsch were both 2-for-4.
Denison's next game on the schedule at Ohio Northern University (Mar. 23) has been canceled, so now the Big Red will look forward to playing a doubleheader at Adrian College starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, in Michigan.
