Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong fourth quarter leads DePauw past Big Red

GREENCASTLE, Ind. (February 8, 2023) – Despite playing an even first-half against the Tigers, the Denison University women's basketball team fell by a final score of 66-54 on the road at DePauw University on Wednesday night at the Neal Fieldhouse.

After an 18-14 first quarter for DePauw and an 18-14 second quarter for Denison, the Big Red were outscored 17-12 in the third quarter after shooting only 4-for-16 (25 percent) from the field.

Then in the fourth quarter, Denison started with a 3-pointer by Abigail Westmeyer to make it a two-point DePauw lead at 49-47, and then a nice transition layup by Molly Fisher on the long pass by Hannah Wynn made it 54-49 Tigers with six and half minutes remaining.

Unfortunately, a 6-0 spurt for DePauw over the next two-plus minutes made it an 11-point game (60-49), and then the run for the Tigers grew to a 10-2 stretch that made it 64-51 with just under three and a half minutes left.

Denison was 1-for-6 with six turnovers during the deciding run before the two teams combined to go scoreless for the next three minutes.

Mikaila Carpenter led Denison with 12 points and 11 rebounds, which was good for her third double-double in a row and fourth in the last five games.

Westmeyer and Brooke Toigo both finished with eight points while Gabby Elliott and Ava Warcaba both had seven, and Fisher added five points while tying her career-high with four assists.

Denison falls to 8-14 overall and 3-8 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while DePauw improves to 15-7 and 10-1. It was the eighth win in a row for the Tigers, a streak that began with their 56-41 win over the Big Red on January 11 in Granville.

Denison will wrap up the week with its second-straight road game against a team in the top-three of the NCAC women's basketball standings as this time, the Big Red head to Ohio Wesleyan University for a 1 p.m. showdown on Saturday, February 11.
