OWU’s hot second half too much for Big Red

DELAWARE, Ohio (February 11, 2023) – The Denison University women's basketball team fell by a final score of 93-57 on the road at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon inside Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan, which is which is ranked No. 25 in the WBCA NCAA Division III Top-25 Coaches Poll and entered the game first in the North Coast Athletic Conference in scoring at 67.9 points per game, put up 52 points in the second half and finished with its second-highest scoring output of the season to improve to 14-9 overall and 9-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Denison, meanwhile, fell to 8-15 and 3-9.

Ohio Wesleyan shot 63.2 percent (12-19) from the field in the opening quarter to take a 27-15 lead over the Big Red.

After trailing by as many as 15 points twice in the second quarter, Denison got to within six (38-32) in the final minute and a half of the period after a 3-pointer by Maddie Goodman and a layup by Mikaila Carpenter, both assisted on by Molly Fisher.

However, an and-one for the Battling Bishops on the next possession made it a nine-point margin (41-32) at the break.

Denison outscored OWU 17-14 in the second quarter after shooting 7-for-10 from the field and holding the Bishops to 5-for-18 (27.78 percent) shooting and a 1-for-6 mark from three.

Then in the third quarter, Goodman kept her strong start to the game going with a great cut and a layup on the assist by Abigail Westmeyer, followed by a pair of free throws by make it a seven-point deficit (44-37) for the Big Red.

Unfortunately, OWU had the answer with another and-one on its next possession, followed by a steal and a 3-pointer after that to get its lead back to 13 points (50-37) four and a half minutes into the second half.

That was the start of a 10-0 stretch for the Battling Bishops to make it 54-37 halfway through the third quarter before OWU ultimately ended the period on a 22-4 run to make it 66-41. Denison shot only 3-for-12 and was 0-for-3 from three in the third quarter while scoring only four points over the final six and a half minutes of the period.

OWU then put the finishing touches on the game by shooting 11-for-19 (57.89 percent) overall and 3-for-6 from three in the fourth quarter.

Goodman finished a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line en route to finishing with 18 points.

Westmeyer finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists while Carpenter also scored 10 points.

Jill Smith sank a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute of the game to finish with six points.

Despite ranking last in the conference in rebounding, OWU did a great job on the glass on Saturday and outrebounded Denison 44-27 overall and 17-9 on the offensive glass, leading to a 15-4 advantage on second chance points. The Battling Bishops also dictated the pace of the game early on and led the Big Red 16-4 on fastbreak points.

Next up, Denison's home finale will pit the Big Red against the College of Wooster starting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, inside Livingston Gymnasium.
