Hot start sends women’s basketball to win over Wooster in home finale

GRANVILLE, Ohio (February 15, 2023) – 14 Big Red players entered the scoring column as the Denison University women's basketball team sank a season-high 11 3-pointers and finished with a season-best 22 steals during a 94-51 defeat of the College of Wooster during its final home game of the 2022-23 season on Wednesday evening inside Livingston Gymnasium.

Denison (9-15 overall, 4-9 North Coast Athletic Conference) also finished with a season-high 39 made field goals, a season-best 25 assists, and tied their season-best with 51 rebounds with also tying for a season-low of eight turnovers.

The Big Red had five steals in the first three and a half minutes of the game and nine points off turnovers en route to an early 11-2 advantage over Wooster (1-23, 0-13) on the scoreboard.

After the third layup of the first quarter by Hannah Wynn following a Wooster turnover, a second chance layup by Ava Warcaba gave Denison its largest lead of the opening quarter (19-4), and then the second 3-pointer of the period for Maddie Goodman made it 22-7 Big Red after the first 10 minutes.

Early in the second quarter, a 3-pointer by Gabby Elliott made it 27-9, and then the fourth basket of the game by Goodman made it 35-12 three and a half minutes into the period.

A stretch of three straight baskets by Abigail Westmeyer made it a 32-point margin (48-16) with three and a half minutes left until halftime.

In the first half alone, Denison had 13 steals and led the Fighting Scots 25-0 on points off turnovers, 11-0 on fastbreak points and 18-6 on second chance points.

For the game, Goodman led the Big Red with an efficient 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range. She also added six assists, four rebounds and four steals.

Westmeyer scored 15 points, all of which came in the first half, and Elliott scored 13 points while shooting 3-for-5 from long range.

Wynn finished with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals, Sydney Wood sank her first two 3-pointers of the season in the fourth quarter, Jill Smith scored two baskets for the third game in a row, and Rosie Drevline, Mary Kate Drevline, Jess Zittel and Grace Klonsky all got into the scoring column as well.

Next up, Denison's regular-season finale will see the Big Red travel to Kenyon College for a 1 p.m. tipoff on Saturday, February 18, with the winner securing fifth place in the NCAC standings.
