GAMBIER, Ohio (February 18, 2023) – With fifth place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings on the line, the Denison University women's basketball team handed a 77-55 defeat to the Owls of Keyon College during the final game of the 2022-23 regular season on Saturday afternoon at Tomsich Arena.
Ava Warcaba led Denison with 16 points, followed
Abigail Westmeyer and
Mikaila Carpenter both with 12 points and
Maddie Goodman and
Gabby Elliott both with 11 points.
Hannah Wynn finished with a career-high 14 rebounds while also adding eight points and four steals.
Using the full-court press for the majority of the game, Denison was able to speed up the Owls and force them to take contested shots.
After ending the first quarter with a 14-12 advantage, Denison would allow just two Kenyon field goals in the second quarter (2-for-13; 15.4 percent) and took a 15-point lead (34-19) into halftime.
The closest the Owls would get to Denison in the second half was to within 11 points (34-23) just a minute and a half into the third quarter before the Big Red proceeded to lead as many as 17 points three times in the third period.
A 3-pointer by Wynn would give the Big Red their biggest lead of the game at 25 points (63-38) at the 5:48 mark in the fourth quarter.
With the win, Denison has now secured the No. 5 seed for the upcoming NCAC tournament with a record of 10-15 overall and 5-9 in the NCAC. Kenyon is now 8-17 overall and 4-10 in the NCAC, and will settle for the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.
Denison will travel to Oberlin College (15-10, 8-6) for the quarterfinals of the NCAC tournament on Tuesday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m.
