TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (February 26, 2023) – The No. 26 Denison University women's tennis team played its first North Coast Athletic Conference match of the 2023 season on Sunday morning and came away with a 9-0 win over DePauw University at the Brickway Tennis & Pickleball Club in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Big Red then returned to the court to battle No. 38 Gustavus Adolphus College in nonconference action in the afternoon and earned a 6-3 victory over the Gusties.
Against the Tigers, the Big Red swept the doubles action as
Caroline Lopez and
Kendall Schrader won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles while Denison also earned a pair of 8-5 wins by
Sarah Robertson and
Sydney Cianciola in the No. 1 spot and
Peyton Oda and
Elizabeth Hoo at No. 3 doubles.
Oda got things started off in singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot before Lopez clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 4 singles.
After both players dropped their first sets, Cianciola came back to earn a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles while Hoo won 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
Robertson added a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles while
Hannah Quick won 6-1, 6-3 in the six spot.
In match two against the Gusties, Cianciola and Robertson earned a dominant 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles before Hoo and Oda gave the Big Red a 2-1 lead with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
Then in singles, Oda pulled out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback win at No. 3 singles before the Big Red fell in each of the top two positions to tie the match at 3-3.
That was followed by a 6-0, 6-4 win by Lopez in the No. 4 spot and 6-0, 6-0 win by Hoo in the five hole to clinch the match for Denison.
Quick then put the finishing touches on the day with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) win at No. 6 singles.
In addition to getting off to a 1-0 start in conference play, Denison picked up its first two wins of the season to improve to 2-2 overall.
Next up for Denison will be a pair of back-to-back matches on back-to-back days in the state of Michigan as the Big Red take on Hope College at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, followed by Kalamazoo College at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 5.
