CHICAGO, Ill. (February 24, 2023) – Denison University opened competition at the 2023 NCAA Division III Diving Regionals with finals in the women's 3-meter and men's 1-meter dives on Friday at the University of Chicago.
The regionals were kicked off with the women's 3-meter dive as
Kerstyn Johnson finished sixth with an 11-dive score of 395.85 while
LuSi Minnich was 14th with a score of 369.65. Johnson's best dive came on her eighth attempt, a reverse 1 1/2 somersault pike (303B), where she was awarded a score of 42.55 points. Minnich's best dive came on her fourth attempt, a reverse dive pike (301B), where she was awarded a score of 40.85 points.
In addition,
Anya Ferner was 18th on the 3-meter board with a score of 357.35. Ferner was awarded 46.80 points for her seventh dive, a forward 2 1/2 somersault pike (105B).
In the men's 1-meter dive, Denison got a strong showing by
Kristian Kowalski (444.80) and
Nick Fogle (440.55), who finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Kowalski's best dive came on his final attempt with a back 1 somersault 3 1/2 twist free (5227D) that garnered him 51.20 points. In all, Kowalski scored at least 50 points three times and did so on each of his final two dives.
Brendan Stanley finished 13th with a total score of 414.40 while he and Fogle both had their best dives on their sixth attempts with a forward 2 1/2 somersault pike (105B). Fogle scored 50.70 points on that dive while Stanley was awarded 48.10 points.
Last but certainly not least,
Brendan Downey finished 19th with a score of 397.10 while collecting his best score (45.60) with a reverse 1 1/2 somersault pike (303B) on his ninth attempt.
The Denison divers will return on Saturday for the conclusion of the NCAA Division III Diving Regional. The women's 1-meter will take place at 12 p.m., followed by the men's 3-meter at 4 p.m.
