SOUTH PARK TOWNSHIP, Pa. (February 18, 2023) – The No. 26 Denison University women's tennis team fell 9-0 at No. 11 Carnegie Mellon University in its 2023 season opener at the Glen Creek Tennis Club on Saturday.
The closest match in doubles was an 8-6 defeat by senior
Sarah Robertson and
Sydney Cianciola at No. 1 doubles while senior
Monique Brual and sophomore
Caroline Lopez fell 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, freshman
Peyton Oda won her first set at the No. 4 spot by a score of 6-3 before falling in a close 7-5 score in set number two and then dropping the third set super tiebreaker 10-6.
In other singles matches, Cianciola fell 6-3, 6-2 in the top spot while Brual lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and newcomer
Caroline Kittle dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision in the sixth position.
It was the first match between Denison (0-1 overall) and Carnegie Mellon (5-1) since the Big Red upset the fifth-ranked Tartans 7-2 in their final match of the 2021 regular season.
Next weekend will see the Big Red travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, to take on a trio of matches February 25-26. Up first will be a battle with No. 18 WashU on Saturday, February 25, in a neutral-site matchup at the Brickway Tennis & Pickleball Club. The next day on Sunday, February 26, the Big Red will remain in Terre Haute to open up North Coast Athletic Conference action against DePauw University before playing Gustavus Adolphus College later on that day as well.
