Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s soccer overcomes two-goal deficit to tie DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. (October 18, 2023) – The Denison University men's soccer team trailed 2-0 at halftime but rallied with two goals in the second half to finish with a 2-2 tie at DePauw University on Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams entered the matchup coming off of shutout wins in which they scored three or more goals, but this one saw the Tigers outshoot the Big Red 13-4 overall and 8-4 on goal.

Big Red goalkeeper Tommy Prokos made his first save less than four minutes into the match and made another in the 16th minute before the first goal by DePauw when a corner kick by Jacob Fowler led to a goal by Joey Vehovsky with just under 12 minutes left in the first half.

Just over four minutes later, a goal kick by the Tigers led to a beautiful pass by Samuel Renggli over the top of the Big Red defense to Matthew Fogo, who had only Prokos to beat and scored easily to make it 2-0.

Denison, meanwhile, did not have its first shot of the match until Cameron McIntosh's free kick in the 40th minute was saved by DePauw's Alexander Lundin.

Three minutes later, a free kick for the Tigers nearly resulted in another goal as Prokos was able to hang on for his third save of the opening 45 minutes.

After outshooting Denison 7-1 in the first half, DePauw forced Prokos to make two more saves in the 52nd and 57th minutes.

Denison's first shot of the second half was another shot by McIntosh that was saved in the 64th minute.

Less than a minute later, however, a free kick from just outside the top of the box by Kameron Kist somehow snuck past the wall of DePauw defenders and went past the goalie's right side to get the Big Red on the scoreboard.

The late surge by Denison continued as Rohan Tripathy scored off a corner kick by Kist to make it 2-2 in the 76th minute.

In the final eight minutes, DePauw missed a shot from the middle of the box, and then in the final four minutes, a header by Fogo was saved right into the waiting arms of Prokos.

Despite the two goals by the Big Red, shots were 6-3 in favor of the Tigers in the second half while Prokos made three more saves in the period to bring his total for the match to six.

Brandon Bianco said after the match, "We didn't have our best today and credit to DePauw for putting us behind early. I'm proud of the fight to get back into the game, but we know we need to be better. We'll take some lessons from this and move forward."

Denison's record moves to 9-3-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while DePauw's goes to 5-5-4 and 1-1-3.

Next up will be a special match for the Big Red as they take on the College of Wooster at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24, at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The Big Red will operate as the home team for the match and look to finish the final week of the regular season off strong.
