COLUMBUS, Ohio (October 24, 2023) – Playing at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, the Denison University men's soccer team lost 1-0 against the College of Wooster on Tuesday night.
The first shot of the match saw
Corey Brunner shoot wide right in the 13th minute before the two goalkeepers,
Tommy Prokos for Denison and Gabriel Thomas for Wooster, made back-to-back saves in the 20th and 21st minutes.
With just under 20 minutes left in the first half, a cross by the Big Red was misplayed by Thomas, ricocheted off a Wooster defender and nearly found its way into the net for an own goal before being cleared away by the Wooster defense.
Denison started the second half with back-to-back blocked shots by
Jack Rice and
Jake Krueger in the opening 61 seconds.
Wooster, however, scored exactly 12 minutes into the second half as a give-and-go to Takoda Zuehlke to get up the field was followed by a second cross attempt by Zuehlke that just snuck over a Big Red defender and found the head of Elliot Miller, who sent it past Prokos.
Just two and a half minutes later, a free kick from just outside the top of the box by
Cameron McIntosh was blocked by the wall of Wooster defenders before his second attempt was also stopped.
Wooster nearly had a chance to put up an open shot from the middle of the box to try and double up its lead, but
Michael Sullivan came flying in to clear the ball away and keep it at a one score-score margin heading into the final 20 minutes of the match.
In the 82nd minute, chaos ensued in front of the Wooster box, but Thomas and the Fighting Scots' defense made their stand as two point-blank shots by
Miles Crosser and then Brunner were both saved.
Rohan Tripathy missed high in the 84th minute while Brunner was blocked in the 86th.
The final attempt was a shot missed right by
Kameron Kist in the final minute as Denison desperately tried to find the equalizer, but nothing was working on the night.
The Big Red outshot the Fighting Scots 8-1 in the first half and 11-3 in the second, but just could not get one past Thomas, who in the end made four saves.
After coming up short in their chance to clinch third place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings, Denison falls to 9-4-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the conference while Wooster improves to 6-7-3 and 3-3-1.
Denison will wrap up the regular season on the road at Ohio Wesleyan University, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, while the winner between the Wooster and DePauw match in Indiana (5:30 p.m.) could jump the Big Red if they lose to the Battling Bishops.
