Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s soccer bounces back with 1-0 win over Wabash

GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 11, 2023) – Following a tough 1-0 loss at home against Kenyon College on Saturday, the Denison University men's soccer team rebounded with a 1-0 win over Wabash College thanks to a beautiful goal by junior Cameron McIntosh in the 79th minute on Wednesday night at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

Denison entered the contest with zero goals in its last two matches while Wabash had five, but it was the Big Red who tried to put the pressure on early as Jake Krueger made a great run down the sideline before cutting inside and having the first shot of the match blocked in the fourth minute.

Then in the 13th minute, a nice cross by McIntosh led to a great header chance for Corey Brunner that just missed wide right.

Tommy Prokos made his first save of the night in the 19th minute, and then the first save for Wabash's Fernando Ramos came in the 22nd minute off a shot by Kameron Kist.

The closest chance for either team to score in the first half came in the 30th minute when a loose ball in front of the box after a free kick led to a shot by Wabash's Fernan Elizondo that was somehow saved by a diving Prokos.

Denison also had a great chance to score in the final two minutes of the first half as a pass into the box set Rohan Tripathy up for a look at the goal before Ramos made the save.

The first shot of the second half was a shot by Brunner that was saved by Ramos in the 52nd minute, and then Denison seemingly scored after a pass by McIntosh to Chris Giglio led to a cross to Krueger in the 55th minute, but an offsides call negated the goal.

Then after a save by Prokos in the 57th minute, Wabash had another good look to score first but hit the crossbar on a shot by Jesse Martinez in the 58th minute.

Wabash continued to challenge the Big Red defense as a one-on-one for Martinez was saved in the 66th minute, and then a shot for Hugo Garcia was blocked by Henri Heyes just 45 seconds later.

Denison hit the post on a shot by Tripathy in the 77th minute, but then Denison finally found pay dirt on a screamer by McIntosh assisted on a cross in by Miles Crosser and a header pass by Krueger.

Both teams had six total shots and two shots on goal in the first half, but despite being outshot 9-6 in the second half, the Big Red held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal in the final 45 minutes, which ultimately helped contribute to the win.

"We obviously needed to get back on track tonight and I was proud of the guys to keep pushing to find a goal," said Coach Brandon Bianco. "Wabash is a really good team and they made it a challenging game, but we'll enjoy this and push again this weekend."

With its fourth straight shutout win over Wabash, Denison improves to 8-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while the Little Giants fall to 5-3-4 and 1-1-1.

Denison will wrap up its current three-match homestand with Senior Day as the Big Red host Wittenberg University at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 14.
