WOOSTER, Ohio (January 21, 2023) – The Denison University women's basketball team won big at the College of Wooster, 74-52, in a game where the Big Red never trailed. Denison outscored the Fighting Scots 27-10 in the first quarter and would control the game from there.
11 Big Red players got into the scoring column on Saturday, led by
Gabby Elliott with 14 points, five assists and four steals.
Mikaila Carpenter was right behind Elliott with 13 points while
Abigail Westmeyer added 10 points. Both players also finished with five rebounds.
Francesca Sileo finished with eight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 40 seconds of the first quarter to cap a 13-0 Denison run that made it 27-8 at the time.
Hannah Wynn chipped in with seven points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists while
Ava Warcaba finished with seven points and a team-high six rebounds.
Last but not least, senior
Rosie Drevline scored a season-high five points while sophomore
Grace Klonsky netted her first basket of the season as well.
As a team, Denison outscored Wooster 46-16 on points in the paint and had 15 steals on 25 Wooster turnovers, resulting in 30 points off turnovers and a 20-1 advantage on fastbreak points for the Big Red.
Denison's first-quarter press caused the Scots to turn the ball over six times, leading to 10 points off those turnovers for the Big Red and a 14-0 advantage on points in the paint. Denison shot a whopping 73.33 percent (11-for-15) from the field in the first quarter and was 3-for-5 from three while Wooster shot only 11.76 percent (2-for-17).
The Big Red would continue to apply the pressure in the second quarter and pushed their lead to 25 points (41-16) after opening the period on a 14-6 run over the first five minutes. During the run, Elliott scored twice on steals followed by the ensuing layup while Westmeyer also added four points before Warcaba finished it off with an and-one.
Denison's lead grew to as large as 38 points (63-25) late in the third quarter as the Big Red outscored the Scots 16-2 to start the period and did not allow a field goal until the final minute and a half. That run featured points by seven different Big Red players, including the final two on a pair of free throws by
Mary Kate Drevline.
With the win, Denison is now 7-10 overall and 2-4 in North Coast Athletic Conference play while Wooster drops down to 1-16 and 0-6
The Big Red will stay on the road for their next contest as they travel to Oberlin College for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday, January 25.
