OBERLIN, Ohio (January 25, 2023) – Despite leading 30-28 at halftime, the Denison University women's basketball team fell by a final score of 76-65 on the road at Oberlin College on Wednesday night.
After falling behind 21-12 early in the second quarter, Denison outscored Oberlin 14-5 in the first six minutes of the period and used a 7-0 run to take a 26-24 lead after a layup and a 3-pointer by
Maddie Goodman to tie the game, followed by a layup by
Mikaila Carpenter to give the Big Red their first lead of the game.
After a pair of free throws by
Hannah Wynn broke a 26-26 tie with two minutes left in the first half,
Francesca Sileo scored on a jumper assisted by Wynn a minute later to make it 30-26 before Oberlin scored on a layup in the final 40 seconds to make it 30-28 at the half.
Unfortunately, Oberlin came out of the locker room and scored the first three buckets of the second half, and then after a layup by Wynn with four minutes left in the third quarter made it a 39-37 Denison deficit, the Yeowomen got five straight points from Bryana Woodard over the next minute to take a 44-37 lead.
Gabby Elliott connected on a pair of free throws with two minutes left in the third quarter and then hit from long range on the next Big Red possession to get Denison to within two again at 44-42, but the Yeowomen went 6-for-6 from the free throw line and added a 3-pointer to outscore the Big Red 9-2 in the final 1:15 of the quarter and make it 53-44 Oberlin heading into the final 10 minutes.
Abigail Westmeyer scored eight points in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to try and keep Denison within striking distance, but a 9-2 run for Oberlin made it a 67-54 Yeowomen advantage with five and a half minutes left to play.
The Big Red got to within six at 71-65 in the final minute of the game after a jumper by Westmeyer followed by an and-one by Carpenter with 48 seconds left, but that was the closest Denison would get as the Yeowomen finished 5-for-6 from the free throw line from there.
Westmeyer would finish with a new career-high of 22 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the field and a 6-for-6 mark from the free throw line. She also added eight rebounds while Carpenter netted the fifth double-double of her senior season with 11 points and 10 boards.
Wynn finished would nine points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks while Goodman had five points, five assists, four rebounds and four blocks.
Denison falls to 7-11 overall and 2-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference so far this season while Oberlin, which began the day ranked first in the NCAC in scoring (66.0 points per game), opponents' field goal percentage (.337 percent), blocked shots (4.94 blocked shots per game), assists (15.24 assists per game) and steals (10.29 steals per game), improves to 12-6 and 5-2.
