Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Big Red drop home game to Battling Bishops

GRANVILLE, Ohio (January 18, 2023) – The Denison University women's basketball team fell by a final score of 79-54 against Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday night inside Livingston Gymnasium. The Battling Bishops outscored the Big Red 26-9 in the deciding third quarter while holding Denison to four made field goals in each of the first three quarters.

Ohio Wesleyan (9-7 overall, 4-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) pressed Denison (6-10, 1-4) for the majority of the game and the Big Red did a good job of handling the pressure early on with only two turnovers in the first quarter. The second quarter, however, was a different story as Denison committed eight turnovers, was outscored 7-0 in points off turnovers, and was limited to only eight field goal attempts.

Denison did take a 16-15 lead early on the second quarter after back-to-back scores by Mikaila Carpenter, but after a 3-pointer by Maddie Goodman, the first made three of the game for either team, made it a 23-21 Denison deficit four and a half minutes into the period, the Big Red were held to without a made field goal until the final minute before halftime.

After closing the first half on a 10-4 run, OWU opened up the third quarter with a 3-pointer on its first possession, which started a 7-0 run to take 15-point lead (41-26) three minutes into the period.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by OWU's Graci Semptimphelter made it a 23-point margin (58-35) with only two minutes left in the third quarter, and the Battling Bishops added a layup in the final 30 seconds to make it an 11-0 run to end the quarter. In all, OWU shot 52.9 percent from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from long range in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Denison did match the Battling Bishops with 19 points in the final quarter on 50 percent (7-for-14) shooting and three 3-pointers, two of which came from Gabby Elliott. The Big Red also outscored OWU 13-5 on fast break points in the game, but were outscored 36-18 in the paint, 20-9 in points off turnovers and 21-5 in second chance points.

Denison was led by Elliott with 15 points, followed by Carpenter with 13 points and Goodman with 11 points and a team-high six assists.

Denison will finish off the week at the College of Wooster with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 21.
