No. 28 women’s squash comes back to earn 5-3 upset win over No. 21 Brown

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (January 14, 2023) – The No. 28 Denison University women's squash team finished off the Wesleyan Round Robin with a 5-3 comeback victory and upset over No. 21 Brown University, followed by a 7-2 loss against the hosts and No. 27-ranked Wesleyan University on Saturday in Middletown, Connecticut.

For Denison (6-3 overall) against Brown (4-4), the comeback began as Charlotte Sigg (No. 6 seed) and Hannah Best (No. 7 seed) both earned 3-2 wins to get the Big Red on the scoreboard after a 3-0 start for the Brown Bears. Sigg won her first two sets, including a 12-10 win in the first set, before winning 12-10, 11-5, 7-11, 8-11, 11-7, and Best had to come from behind two sets to zero to win 2-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-2, 11-3.

Denison then took a 4-3 lead after wins of 3-1 (12-10, 7-11, 11-4, 11-8) by Coco Ogden at the No. 5 seed and 3-0 (11-3, 11-0, 11-4) by Natalie Stanchina at the No. 8 seed.

In the deciding match against Brown, Maria Clara Ramirez (No. 1 seed) dropped her first set 11-7 before winning the next two sets in extra scoring (13-11 & 12-10) to take a 2-1 lead. Then after falling 11-9 in the fourth set and finding herself behind by scores of 9-4 and 10-8 in the final set, Ramirez dug down deep and won four points in a row to take the 12-10 fifth-set win and clinch the outright victory for the Big Red.

Denison's only wins against Wesleyan (5-5) came at the top-two seeds as Ramirez swept her opponent 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-4) at the top spot to improve to 8-1 on the season as a freshman. Antoinette Ramsey pulled out a five set win (11-8, 11-5, 4-11, 7-11, 11-8) at the No. 2 seed. Denison did, however, put an end to Wesleyan's streak of four straight 9-0 sweeps.

Next up, the Big Red will host their first-ever home match as they welcome Carnegie Mellon University to the Mitchell Center on Saturday, January 21.
