GRANVILLE, Ohio (January 14, 2023) – The No. 8 Denison University men's swimming & diving team took down both No. 9 Carnegie Mellon University 169.50-130.50 and No. 13 Calvin University 183-117 in a double dual meet on Saturday at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
Richie Kurlich once again led the way for the Big Red with wins in both the 100 butterfly and the 200 butterfly, while also helping Denison kick off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Denison ultimately won the 200 medley relay as the "A" team of Nick Settembrine,
Patrick Daly,
Josh Song and Kurlich worked together to finish with a time of 1:32.37.
The Big Red then took home three of the top-four finishers in the first individual event of the day, the 1000 freestyle, as
Lucas Conrads won it with a time of 9:46.36, followed by
Luke Landis (9:55.69) in second and
Max Hutson-Comeaux (10:03.14) in fourth. Then in the 200 freestyle relay,
Sam Myaard (1:43.57),
Christian Narcelles (1:44.02) and
Christian McIntire (1:44.93) finished in order between third and fifth place.
Settembrine (53.24) and
Gavin Jones (53.87) finished in third and fifth place, respectively, in the 100 backstroke before Daly (57.42),
Elijah Venos (57.60) and Franceso Assalone (58.64) finished in order between second and fourth place in the 100 breaststroke.
Kurlich then picked up his first individual victory of the day with a time of 1:50.98 in the 200 butterfly.
Richie Stewart tied for third in the 50 freestyle at 21.50 seconds before Narcelles finished second in the 100 freestyle at 47.51 seconds.
Conrads was third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.63 while Settembrine was fifth at 1:58.27.
In the 200 breaststroke, Daly (2:07.94), Jones (2:09.24) and Venos (2:10.30) finished in order between second and fourth place.
Denison took five of the top-seven spots in the 500 freestyle as Myaard (4:46.36) was second,
Tyler Distenfeld (4:47.74) was third, McIntire (4:51.40) was fourth,
Ryan Foreback (4:52.44) was sixth and Hutson-Comeaux (4:54.68) was seventh.
Kurlich went on to earn his second individual win of the day, doing so with an NCAA Division III National "B" cut time of 48.63 seconds in the 100 butterfly, and then in the final individual event, the 400 IM,
Max Soja (4:11.15), Conrads (4:11.50) and
Connor Brown (4:15.27) finished in order between third and fifth place.
The meet was then closed out as the Big Red "A" team of Daly, Kurlich, Stewart and
Dhinal Weerasinghe finished second with a time of 1:23.12 in the 200 freestyle relay.
In diving,
Kristian Kowalski (296.60),
Nick Fogle (286.20) and
Brendan Downey (284.10) finished in order between third and fifth place in the 1-meter dive. Then in the 3-meter dive,
Brendan Stanley (317.00) was third, Kowalski (295.65) was fifth and Fogle (291.20) was sixth. All six scores were good for a provisional regional qualifying score.
Denison returns to action on Saturday, January 28, when they host Senior Day against North Coast Athletic Conference foe Ohio Wesleyan University and NCAA Division I Youngstown State University in a sprint meet starting at 10 a.m.
