SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 2, 2022) – A pair of early goals by seniors
Ethan Miracle and
Luke Mattessich helped propel the Denison University men's soccer team to a 5-0 season-opening victory on the road at Springfield College on Friday evening in Massachusetts. It was the first win during a season opener for the Big Red since 2015.
It was the first ever meeting between Denison (1-0) and Springfield (0-1), and it did not take the Big Red long to get on the scoreboard as Mattessich assisted on Miracle's goal just one minute and 17 seconds in, and then less than two minutes later Mattessich found pay dirt off the assist from sophomore
Cameron McIntosh.
In the 35th minute,
Luca Vicinelli became the third Denison senior to score in the first half as he made it 3-0.
Then in the 56th minute, McIntosh had a shot saved by the Springfield goalkeeper before Miracle rushed to the loose ball and scored his second goal of the match to make it 4-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Tommy Prokos made his first career start and finished with three saves across 72-plus minutes.
After entering in the 73rd minute, fellow-sophomore keeper
Zach Barr had to make a quick save to help preserve the shutout, and then a few minutes later junior
Rohan Tripathy scored on the assist by sophomore
Cole Trigg to make it 5-0.
For the match, the Big Red finished with 24 shots with 12 players firing at least one attempt. Miracle finished with four total shots and three shots on goal while sophomore
Jake Krueger, freshman
Phil Koutsaftis and senior
Henry Schwartz each had three shots.
Next up, Denison will head to Waltham, Massachusetts, to play Brandeis University for the first time in program history. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. on Sunday, September 4.
