WALTHAM, Mass. (September 4, 2022) – The Denison University men's soccer team concluded its season-opening trip to Massachusetts with its second straight shutout performance, but this time the Big Red were unable to get on the scoreboard themselves after scoring five goals two days before. In the end, Denison settled for a scoreless tie in its first ever meeting against a tough Brandeis University squad on Sunday.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Denison's sophomore goalkeeper
Tommy Prokos made a terrific save on a penalty shot by Brandeis that helped change the complexion of the match.
Just over 30 seconds later, Prokos made another save on a header after a corner kick by the Judges to keep it scoreless.
As the match reached the final 22 minutes, Denison began to launch a flurry of shots and crosses into the box as
Vitor Rocha put together a strong run toward the goal until it was blocked away for a Big Red corner kick.
The corner kick, taken by
Luca Vicinelli, then led to three straight blocked shots by the Big Red from
Lorenz Hoover,
Cole Trigg and
Ben Goeller.
In the final two minutes, the Denison defense held firm on a late corner kick by Brandeis as the Judges tried to fill the box, and then a quick counter by the Big Red in the final minute led to a great spin move by
Jake Krueger who got loose in the opposite box and fired a shot that was just saved away by the Brandeis' goalkeeper Aiden Guthro.
Both Prokos and Guthro would finish with three saves in the match while Krueger, Rocha and
Cameron McIntosh led with three shots each. Overall, the Big Red doubled up the Judges on shot attempts at 16-8, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
Head Coach
Brandon Bianco spoke on Denison's first two matches of the season, saying, "Opening weekends are always a challenge with preparation and being ready physically for multiple matches days apart. While we can be sharper in key moments, I'm really proud of how the team competed this weekend. We didn't concede a goal in two matches, and I know we're excited to get back home and tackle the rest of the nonconference schedule."
After Denison scored five goals in its season opener on Friday and Brandeis scored four in its opener on Thursday, both teams moved to 1-0-1 on the season with the tie on Sunday.
Denison will now head back to Ohio for a pair of home matches against the University of Mount Union at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, followed by Grove City College at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 10.
