Volleyball drops final two matches of ONU Invitational

ADA, Ohio (September 17, 2022) – On a day that featured two opponents receiving votes in the AVCA Division III Coaches' Poll, the final two matches of the Ohio Northern University Invitational for the Denison University volleyball team saw the Big Red fall 3-1 (25-23, 25-8, 18-25, 25-17) in the morning against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh before dropping a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-12) decision to Muskingum University in the afternoon.

Match 1 (Denison 1, Wisconsin-Oshkosh 3):
  • It was the first ever meeting between Denison and Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
  • After the fifth kill of the first set by Lucy Anderson tied it at 21-21, Oshkosh went up 23-21 on a kill and a Big Red attack error. Then after two more kills by Anderson made it 23-22 and then 24-23, respectively, the Titans won the first set on a Denison service error.
  • Both teams hit over .250 percent with 16 kills and only four attack errors in the first set while Anderson led all players with seven kills. One of the differences in the first set, however, was the four Big Red service errors compared to one service error for the Titans.
  • After Oshkosh hit an incredible .700 percent with 15 kills and only one attack error to win the second set, Denison hit .462 percent with 13 kills and only one attack error to win the third set.
  • Unfortunately, in the fourth set, Denison trailed by only one at 18-17 before seven straight points for the Titans featuring four kills and ending with an ace.
  • The Titans hit .328 percent for the match while the Big Red made 12 service errors and six blocking errors.
  • After finishing with half of her kills in the first set, Anderson would end with 14 kills and a .375 hitting percentage while Corinne Boyd added seven kills on a .313 hitting percentage.
  • Kirby MacKinnon finished with 33 assists and Jenna Corrao had 20 digs and five service aces.

Match 2 (Denison 0, Muskingum 3):
  • Both teams hit over .200 percent with 12 or more kills in the first two sets before Muskingum hit .400 percent with only one attack error in the third set while holding Denison to .026 percent hitting with nine kills and eight errors in the third frame.
  • Muskingum took control early with a 9-1 run to lead 12-7 in the first set, and then three straight kills brought up set point at 24-17.
  • Tied 18-18 in the second set, a 5-0 Fighting Muskies' run featuring four kills and then ending with an ace made it 23-18. Denison got back to within one at 24-23 on a kill and an ace by Kelly McCaskey, but the 16th kill of the set for Muskingum put them up 2-0.
  • In the third set, it was a 6-0 Muskingum run that started with three straight Denison attack errors and ended with three straight kills to make it 12-5 and start an even bigger 13-3 run to go up by 11 at 19-8.
  • Anderson led Denison with 11 kills and four blocks, MacKinnon had 28 assists, and Corrao finished with 13 digs.

Next Up: After defeating the Student Princes 3-1 on Friday, the Big Red will now play at Heidelberg University beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21, in Tiffin, Ohio, before hosting the Denison/Kenyon Quad on Saturday, September 24.
