Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Kay’s late goal sends No. 19 men’s lacrosse past Grove City in NCAA Second Round

YORK, Pa. (May 13, 2022) – After falling behind 7-0 and losing 14-10 at Grove City College earlier in the season, the No. 19 Denison University men's lacrosse team remained undefeated since that March 30th matchup as this time, the Big Red come out on top of the Wolverines by a final score of 14-13 when it mattered the most in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

It was a battle of two 15-4 teams who had both won 10 or more games in a row entering the matchup, and who were both ranked in the top-10 of the region. The NCAA's final regular-season regional rankings listed Denison at No. 2 in Region IV and Grove City as the No. 7 squad in Region IV, and it lived up to the hype as the game featured six ties and five lead changes.

The first half featured two 3-0 runs for the Big Red to lead it 7-4 in the second quarter, but Grove City came back to tie it at 7-7 at halftime after a goal with just 0.7 seconds on the clock in the first half.

The Wolverines then scored the first three goals of the second half to make it a 6-0 Grove City run to jump ahead by three themselves at 10-7.

From there, neither team scored for over seven minutes until back-to-back man-up goals by Denison's Nate Kay and Gavin Pappas, both within 30 seconds of each other and both assisted on by Camden Bowdy, got it down to a one-score game at 10-9 with two and a half minutes left in the third quarter.

Then with 1:18 left in the period, Pappas found Kay for his second goal in the last 1:40 of game time to tie it all up at 10-10.

After Grove City scored with less than a second remaining in the second quarter, it was Denison that beat the buzzer with only two seconds left in the third quarter as Bowdy put the Big Red back ahead by a score of 11-10.

The two teams then went back-and-forth as after the first two goals of the fourth quarter went to Grove City, Bowdy scored again to tie it at 12-12 with 12:36 left to play.

Then only 21 seconds after Grove City took its final lead of the game at 13-12 with a goal with just over eight minutes left, Luke Fisher scored on the assist by Will Filiault to make it 13-13 with 7:45 remaining.

It then took until the 2:24-mark in the game when a great pass inside by Fisher found Kay open by the goal for a laser past the goalkeeper to put the Big Red in front 14-13.

Getting the ball back for a final possession with under a minute left, Grove City fired four shots in the final 33 seconds, but they were all off target as the Big Red were able to hold on for the win.

Kay would finish with four goals on the night, but none would be bigger than the last one.

Bowdy (3 goals, 3 assists) led the Big Red with six points while Fisher (2 goals, 2 assists) and Tyack (1 goals, 3 assists) both matched Kay with four points and Pappas (2 goals, 1 assist) finished with three points.

Goalkeeper Archer Darrach finished with 13 saves, five of which came in a fourth quarter where Denison was outshot 18-12.

The first meeting between Denison and Grove City this year was the first ever meeting between the two teams, so in addition to tying the series with the Wolverines, the Big Red improved to 16-4 overall and won their 11th game in a row to advance to the NCAA Third Round (Sweet Sixteen), where they will face No. 6 nationally-ranked York College of Pennsylvania at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. York is currently 18-2 overall with 16 straight wins after defeating Southern Virginia University 18-8 in their second-round matchup on Friday.
