No. 25 baseball finishes with two wins on Senior Day

GRANVILLE, Ohio (May 1, 2022) – The No. 25 Denison University baseball team kicked off its Senior Day on Sunday by finishing off an 11-4 win over Allegheny College that resumed in the middle of the seventh inning after being suspended due to rain back on April 11. Then later on in the day, the Big Red returned to the field against No. 12 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University and finished with a big 5-2 win over the Yellow Jackets.

Game 1 (Denison 11, Allegheny 4)
  • The game picked back up in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Big Red already leading 8-4 after scoring in each of the first five innings of the game.
  • In the top of the ninth, Denison added to its lead with a three-run top of the ninth inning that featured a big pinch hit home run to left field by Dylan Hunter.
  • For the game, Ari Fierer finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI's while Danny Alvarez was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI's.
  • George Viebrock returned to the mound after pitching the final inning before the game was suspended, and he was able to pitch all three innings on Sunday without allowing a run to earn the four-inning save.
  • Trey Holland (5-0) was credited with the win after originally pitching the first five innings of the game allowing just four hits, two total runs, one earned run and two walks to go along with four strikeouts.

Game 2 (Denison 5, Baldwin Wallace 2)
  • After the Big Red fell behind 1-0 after giving up an earned run via an error in the first inning, Jacob Pendergraft (1-0) proceeded to limit the Yellow Jackets to only one hit and one walk over the next four innings.
  • Pendergraft was benefited by a 6-4-3 double play to end the top of the second and a caught stealing for the second out in the top of the fourth, and then after Baldwin Wallace stranded two runners on base in the fifth, the Denison offense made its presence felt in the bottom half as Daniel Spencer belted a two-run home run down the left field line to give Denison a lead it would never surrender.
  • Denison added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI-doubles by Hunter and Alvarez, and then both teams scored a run in the seventh.
  • Henry Haack earned his second save of the season after pitching the final three innings allowing three hits and one unearned run.
