No. 21 Denison falls at No. 1 Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio (April 3, 2022) – The No. 21 Denison University baseball team fell for the second time in six days against the No. 1 nationally-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Marietta College, this time falling 7-2 on the road on the Pioneers' home field.

After Denison (11-7 overall) failed to capitalize on a bases loaded opportunity with only one out in the top of the first and grounded into a double play, Marietta (19-3) started off with a leadoff triple followed by a double and a single in its half of the first inning.

In all, the Pioneers finished with four runs on five hits in the first.

Denison got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when Eric Colaco doubled to center field with one out, stole third base and then scored with two outs on a single to left field by Ari Fierer.

Colaco then scored his second run of the game after leading off the top of the fifth inning with a single to right field before stealing second, advancing to third on a single through the left side by Charlie Glennon and then scoring on an RBI-groundout by Danny Alvarez.

Denison proceeded to strand leadoff singles in both the seventh and eighth innings before also stranding a leadoff hit by pitch in the top of the ninth.

Fierer was 3-for-3 with a double while Colaco finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and a double.

The Big Red will return to North Coast Athletic Conference action as they host DePauw University for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, in Granville, Ohio. Then on Saturday, April 9, Denison will head to Meadville, Pennsylvania to take on Allegheny College starting at 1 p.m.
