Baseball sweeps first home conference series

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 7, 2022) – The Denison University baseball team played at home in North Coast Athletic Conference action for the first time so far this season and earned their first conference sweep of the year with wins of 13-2 and 12-2 both in seven innings over DePauw University on Thursday at the Big Red Baseball Field.

Game 1 (Denison 13, DePauw 2):
  • A two-out rally starting with a double to right center and then followed by an RBI-single through the right side led to the first run of the game for DePauw in the top of the third inning, but the Tigers proceeded to leave the bases loaded.
  • The missed opportunity for more runs by DePauw was immediately capitalized on by the Big Red as in the bottom half of the third, Denison's first hit of the game was an RBI-double to right field by Eric Colaco scoring Owen Wilson, and then a sacrifice fly to right field by Charlie Glennon scored Colaco to give the Big Red the lead.
  • Danny Alvarez continued the bottom of the third inning with Denison's second RBI-double of the frame, this one to center to score Ari Fierer and make it 3-1.
  • After some heads up baserunning led to a run for DePauw to make it a one-run game in the top of the fourth, Denison batted around and scored six runs in the bottom half. Colaco hit a two-run single up the middle and Wilson scored on a wild pitch before back-to-back two-out RBI-doubles by Glennon and Alvarez and an RBI-single to right by pinch hitter Cameron Brickley.
  • Denison then loaded the bases with nobody out and added four runs in the fifth as Wilson hit an RBI-single to right, Payton Burch scored on a wild pitch, and Fierer came up with a two-run single to left center.
  • Starting pitcher Taylor Perrett (4-1) pitched five innings allowing six hits, two runs and two walks while striking out five before George Viebrock pitched 1-2-3 sixth and seventh innings.

Game 2 (Denison 12, DePauw 2):
  • Denison struck quickly as Colaco led off with a single to right field, stole second base and then scored on a single to right field by Alvarez.
  • Then with two outs, Josh Bohn scored Alvarez with a standup triple to right center field and Brickley singled up the middle to score Bohn and make it 3-0.
  • In the second inning, Denison added a two-run single to right field by Fierer to make it 5-0, and then in the top of the third inning, a great diving stop at second base by Bohn helped prevent a run for DePauw.
  • In the fourth inning, Denison turned a 6-4-3 double play in the top half before adding four more runs in the bottom half to make the score 9-0. Fierer doubled off the fence in right field to score Colaco for his third RBI of the game before Bohn doubled to left field to score Fierer with two outs and Brickley followed with a single to center to score two more runners.
  • In the fifth inning, the great defense for Denison continued as they turned another double play on a lineout back to the pitcher, Kenny Lippman (2-1).
  • Lippman finished with six innings pitched allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out seven.
  • DePauw, meanwhile, threw out seven different pitchers, only one of which tossed more than one inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, Denison senior Matt Hastings recorded his first career hit and RBI with a single up the middle to score Brickley and make the score 12-0.
  • The final out of the game to prevent the Tigers from extending it was a great running catch in center field by Brickley heading toward the fence.
  • In the end, Brickley finished 3-for-3 with three RBI's and a triple while Bohn was 2-for-4 with two RBI's, two runs scored, a double and a triple. Additionally, Fierer was 2-for-5 with four RBI's while Colaco stole two bases and scored three runs.

Records:
  • Denison improved to 13-7 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC while DePauw dropped to 8-12 and 1-3.

Next Up: The Big Red's next scheduled matchup is a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at Allegheny College on Sunday, April 10.
