TIFFIN, Ohio (April 26, 2022) – The No. 25 Denison University baseball team won 7-2 on the road at Heidelberg University to extend its current winning streak to 10 games in a row.
It was the first meeting between the two teams since a 2-1 win for Heidelberg during the NCAA Regional back in 2019.
In this meeting, Denison (21-7 overall) trailed 2-1 after a two-run home run by Heidelberg in the bottom of the first inning before putting up a five-spot in the top of the fifth.
Danny Alvarez led off the fifth with a double to left center and was followed by a walk to
Daniel Spencer and a single by
Jake Welsch to load the bases with nobody out.
From there, a bases loaded walk by
Payton Burch tied the game at 2-2; and then after back-to-back swinging strikeouts by the Big Red, an RBI-single to short by
Eric Colaco gave Denison the lead at 3-2.
One batter later,
Dylan Hunter came up with a three-run double down the left field line to make it 6-2.
Will McManaman earned the win after entering to start the fourth inning and ultimately pitching four innings in relief giving up just two hits, no runs and one walk.
George Viebrock then finished off the final two innings with six straight outs to end it.
The Big Red offense, meanwhile, was led by a 3-for-4 effort by Hunter and a 3-for-6 effort by Colaco, who scored twice as well and had a triple to leadoff the game.
Next up, Denison will host Hanover College starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, before returning to North Coast Athletic Conference action against the College Wooster starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, in Granville.
