GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 27, 2022) – The No. 25 Denison University baseball team won 15-8 in nonconference action at home over Hanover College in to see its current winning streak increase to 11 games in a row.
It was the first ever meeting between Denison (22-7 overall) and Hanover (15-16) as both teams entered the matchup on Wednesday playing great baseball in their last 10 games. The Big Red were 10-0 with an average of over 11 runs per game while giving up only three runs per game to go along with two shutouts and six run-rule victories during that stretch. Hanover, meanwhile, had won eight of its last 10 games while averaging 10 runs per game.
In the end, Denison scored its 15 runs on 13 hits and six errors by Hanover, which finished two runs below its scoring averaging during the last 10 games.
After a pair of nice defensives plays by
Owen Wilson at shortstop and
Payton Burch at second base to start the top of the second inning,
Kenny Lippman got his third called strike three of the first two innings to strand a runner in scoring position.
Then in the bottom of the second, the Big Red took advantage of a pair of fielding errors by the Panthers to score four runs on no hits.
In the top of the fourth, Hanover put up five runs on two hits, including a three-run triple to right center field to tie the game before an unearned run on an error at third base to take the lead.
Fortunately, Denison answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with a bunt single by Burch to score Wilson and tie the game.
Then the Big Red loaded the bases with nobody out as an RBI grounder by
Dylan Hunter scored
Cameron Brickley to put Denison back ahead at 6-5. In all, it was a three-run bottom of the fourth for Denison, which then batted around and added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 12-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, Denison nearly reached the 10-run rule with three more runs highlighted by an RBI-double to right center by
Matt McClements and an RBI-single just off the glove of the diving second baseman by
Colin Ravin, but a great diving catch by the Panthers' center fielder kept the Big Red from walking it off with extra bases.
All nine Big Red starters recorded at least one hit while Hunter,
Ari Fierer and Burch each had two hits and Wilson and Brickley both scored three runs.
Next up, Denison will return to North Coast Athletic Conference action against the College Wooster starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, in Granville.
