Big Red push winning streak to nine; reach 20-win mark with sweep over OWU

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 23, 2022) – The Denison University baseball team swept Ohio Wesleyan University by scores of 18-5 in seven innings in game one and then 13-8 in game two on Saturday to push their current winning streak to nine games in a row while also reaching the 20-win mark overall for the sixth full season in a row under the guidance of Head Coach Mike Deegan.
 
Game 1 (Denison 18, Ohio Wesleyan 5)
  • Danny Alvarez hit a three-run home run to center field in the bottom of the first and then Eric Colaco hit a solo homer to right center to start off a six-run bottom of the second for the Big Red that also featured a pair of two-RBI doubles by Josh Bohn and Owen Wilson.
  • Bohn added another RBI with a single up the middle to start the scoring in the bottom of the third before back-to-back RBI-doubles by Jake Welsch and Daniel Spencer made it 12-0.
  • In the end, Denison finished with 20 hits and nine doubles as a team.
  • Alvarez was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBI's, Bohn was 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI's, and Spencer was 3-for-3 with four RBI's.
  • Trey Holland (3-0) earned the win after pitching five innings allowing six hits, two runs, two walks and striking out four.
  • Jacob Pendergraft finished off the final 1.1 innings of the game allowing no hits, no runs and one walk, including a 1-2-3 top of the seventh on three straight groundouts.
 
Game 2 (Denison 13, Ohio Wesleyan 8)
  • Denison scored more runs (13) than it had hits (11) in game two, and had to overcome a four-run top of the second inning featuring four unearned runs by the Battling Bishops.
  • In the bottom of the second, Denison scored its first two runs of the game on wild pitches before an RBI-triple to right center by Dylan Hunter and then a third run on a wild pitch to tie it at 4-4.
  • Then in the bottom of the third, the second home run of the day by Colaco was a grand slam to center field to make it 8-4 Big Red.
  • After OWU got to within two in the seventh inning thanks to a two-run home run, Denison answered with four unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh, the final two of which came via a single to center field by Welsch.
  • In game two, Spencer was 3-for-4 with two runs scored; Colaco was 3-for-6 with his grand slam; Hunter was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple; and Charlie Glennon was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
  • Taylor Perrett (6-1) earned the win by going five innings allowing seven hits, five total runs but only one earned run, one walk and eight strikeouts.
 
Records:
  • With its two wins on Saturday, Denison (20-7 overall, 10-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) reached the 20-win mark for the eighth time in nine full seasons with Coach Deegan at the helm of the program. The Big Red also improved to 9-2 at home on the season.
  • OWU, meanwhile, drops to 8-21 overall and 2-9 in the NCAC.
 
Next Up: Denison will play a pair of nonconference games next week at Heidelberg University on Tuesday, April 26, and at home against Hanover College on Wednesday, April 27, before returning to conference action at home against the College Wooster on Saturday, April 30.
