Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball comes back to win game one in 10 innings before sweeping Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio (April 20, 2022) – After scoring four runs to tie the game in the ninth inning and then scoring the winning run in the 10th to defeat Kenyon College 8-7 in game one and hand the Lords their first loss so far this season in North Coast Athletic Conference action, the Denison University baseball team finished off the sweep with a 13-3 win in seven innings in game two.

Game 1 (Denison 8, Kenyon 7)
  • Down 7-4 in the top of the ninth inning, Dylan Hunter led off with a single to center field for his third hit of the game, and then two batters later Josh Bohn singled to center field as well before Jake Welsch drew a walk to load the bases.
  • After an RBI-walk by Payton Burch to score Hunter, Owen Wilson followed with a single through the right side to score both Bohn and Welch and make it only a one-run game.
  • With two outs and the tying run in Burch on second base, Eric Colaco singled through the left side and Burch raced home to tie the game at 7-7.
  • After entering to pitch in the eighth inning and getting three strikeouts in a row, Kenny Lippman (4-1) then again struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
  • The top of the 10th inning then started in near perfect fashion for Denison as Hunter led off with a double down the left field line, his fourth hit and third double of the game.
  • After a fly out to center field by Danny Alvarez moved Hunter to third base with only one out, Bohn followed with an RBI-single to left field to score Hunter and give the Big Red their first lead since it was 1-0.
  • Lastly, after a leadoff single to shortstop for the Lords in the bottom of the 10th, Lippman got a fly out to right field followed by back-to-back swinging strikeouts to end it.
  • After striking out 10 Hiram batters in six innings to earn the win last Saturday, Lippman struck out eight Kenyon hitters in only three innings while allowing only one hit and no walks to earn the win on Wednesday.
  • Will McManaman also did a good job in relief before Lippman, pitching 2.2 innings allowing only one hit, one run and no walks.

Game 2 (Denison 13, Kenyon 3)
  • After a sacrifice fly to right field by Hunter scored Colaco to make it 1-0 Big Red in the top of the first, Denison exploded for seven runs on four hits in the top of the second. The inning featured a two-run single through the right side by Daniel Spencer, two runs on a wild pitch, another sacrifice fly by Hunter to score Colaco yet again, and then a two-run home run by Alvarez.
  • Alvarez would finish 3-for-5 with three RBI's while Spencer was 2-for-2 with three RBI's, two runs scored and two walks and Hunter finished with three RBI's as well.
  • The Denison pitching staff of Trey Holland (2-0), Nick Falter, Henry Haack and George Viebrock combined to strikeout 13 Kenyon hitters while limiting the Lords to six hits, three total runs, two earned runs and two walks.

Records:
  • Denison improved to 18-7 overall and 8-1 in the NCAC, and has now won seven games in a row, while Kenyon fell to 19-8 and 8-2 while suffering its first two losses at home of the season (5-2) and seeing its program-best 14-game winning streak come to an end.

Next Up: Denison will host Ohio Wesleyan University in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, before playing two nonconference games next week at Heidelberg University (April 26) and at home against Hanover College (April 27).
