Six-run ninth inning sends No. 25 Denison past Berry

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. (March 5, 2022) – Only one day after winning its 2022 season opener by a final score of 13-2, the No. 25 Denison University baseball team won its second game of the 5th Annual Berry Invitational, but this time, the Big Red needed a ninth-inning comeback to take down the host school Berry College (Ga.) 9-4 on Saturday.

It was the Eric Colaco show throughout the game for Denison, which led 1-0 after a leadoff home run to center field by Colaco in the top of the first inning. Colaco then singled with two outs to score Daniel Spencer and tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning before coming up with a sacrifice fly to again score Spencer and tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh.

Then after Berry took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth, Denison started the top of the ninth with a walk by Josh Bohn and a sacrifice bunt by Chris Karasinski to move Bohn into scoring position.

Colaco then followed with his fourth RBI of the game on a single to center field to score Bohn and make it 4-4, but the Big Red were not done there.

After Colaco reached second base on a throwing error by the Vikings' second baseman, Ari Fierer singled to right field to bring him in and give Denison its first lead since it was 1-0.

Danny Alvarez followed with a single to right to score Dylan Hunter while Matt McClements scored on an error, Noah Leib followed that with a single through the right side to score Alvarez, and then the Big Red batted around as Spencer singled up the middle to bring home Leib and cap the six-run frame on five hits and two errors.

In the bottom of the ninth, two groundouts followed by a walk and then a fly out to center field moved Denison to 2-0 on the season. Berry, meanwhile, fell to 8-4 after taking down the No. 4-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Adrian College, by a score of 13-7 on Friday.

Colaco finished 3-for-4 with four RBI's and two runs scored while Spencer was 2-for-3 with two runs and two walks, and both Fierer and Alvarez were 2-for-4.

Out of the bullpen, Kenny Lippman allowed only one hit and one run in his 2.1 innings of work starting in the fourth while Henry Haack (1-0) allowed only two hits, one walk and one run through the final 3.1 innings to earn the win.

Now, it is the Big Red who will take on the Adrian during the third and final day of the Berry Invitational. The Bulldogs and the Big Red will take the field starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 6.
