MOUNT BERRY, Ga. (March 6, 2022) – After combining for 22 runs on 27 hits in its first two games of the season, the No. 25 Denison University baseball team scored five runs in each of the first two innings en route to earning a 19-9 win over No. 4 Adrian College on the third and final day of the 5th Annual Berry Invitational.
It was a game that featured five combined home runs between the two teams, including two grand slams by the Big Red.
After going 3-for-4 with four RBI's on Saturday, freshman
Eric Colaco led off the bottom of the first inning on Sunday with a double down the left field line and then scored on the ensuing single to right field by
Dylan Hunter.
Two batters later,
Danny Alvarez singled to right field as well to score Hunter, and then
Daniel Spencer followed with a two-run double to left center before scoring himself on a two-out single to center by
Payton Burch.
Then after a pair of solo home runs by the Bulldogs in the top of the second inning to make it 5-2, the Big Red put up another five-spot in the bottom half of the inning on the third RBI and second run-scoring hit of the game by Spencer and a two-out grand slam to left field by
Charlie Glennon.
Denison's second grand slam of the game came with no outs and was off the bat of Hunter in the bottom of the seventh inning. That was just half of an eight-run seventh inning overall for the Big Red, who had just three hits in the inning but took advantage of two of the Bulldogs' six errors in the game, including scoring three runs on a dropped fly ball with two outs.
Hunter finished 4-for-6 with five RBI's and four runs scored and Alvarez was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. In all, seven different Big Red players scored at least two times.
With the big win, Denison started its new 2022 season 3-0 while Adrian dropped to 4-3 after going 1-2 at the Berry Invitational.
Next up for the Big Red baseball team will be its Spring Break trip to the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida, which begins on Saturday, March 12, against Saint John's University.
