MOUNT BERRY, Ga. (March 4, 2022) – The No. 25 Denison University baseball team won its first game of the new 2022 season on Friday at the Berry Invitational. The Big Red took on the Pride of Greensboro College and won by a final score of 13-2.
Denison (1-0 overall) started off its season with four-run top of the first inning that featured an RBI-single by junior
Ari Fierer, a two-run double by sophomore
Noah Leib and an RBI-single by senior
Payton Burch.
It was a combination of relentless hitting and strong pitching as the Big Red belted out 15 hits, including at least one hit by 10 different players, and finished with six stolen bases, four doubles and six total extra base hits.
Sophomore
Jake Welsch was 3-for-3 with two RBI's, Frier was 2-for-4 with two RBI's, Burch was 2-for-3, freshman
Eric Colaco was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored, and senior
Dylan Hunter walked twice and also scored three times.
Denison's first home run of the year was a two-run shot to left field by sophomore
Colin Ravin in the top of the ninth inning to make it 12-2.
On the mound, the trio of junior
Charlie Fleming (1-0), fifth-year senior
Trey Holland and senior
Sam Maier struck out 10 Greensboro (3-2) batters and did walk anyone. Fleming earned the start in the season opener and gave up seven hits and two runs in the first five innings while Holland allowed only one hit in his three innings and Maier struck out two in the final inning.
Day two of the Berry Invitational will see Denison take on the host school, Berry College (Ga.), at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 5.
