GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 25, 2022) – The No. 18 Denison University baseball team opened up its three-game series against Transylvania University with an 11-1 win in seven innings on a rainy Friday night on the Big Red Baseball Field.
Eric Colaco got the Big Red on the scoreboard in the first inning as he led off the bottom half with a hit by pitch, stole second base, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Payton Burch and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by
Daniel Spencer.
Then after the sacrifice fly cleared the bases, Denison put together a two-out rally to add another run as
Ari Fierer walked,
Charlie Glennon singled through the left side and
Danny Alvarez was hit by a pitch before
Jake Welsch walked to bring in Fierer and make it 2-0.
After three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to make it 7-0,
Josh Bohn blasted a solo home run to left field to make it 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Denison loaded the bases with two outs before Fierer tripled to center field to clear the bases and send everyone home early.
Fierer would finish 2-for-3 with four RBI's, three runs scored, two walks, a triple and a double while Bohn was 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. Additionally, each of Denison's top four players in the batting order scored two or more runs.
On the mound,
Charlie Fleming (3-1) pitched six innings allowing six hits, one unearned run and two walks while striking out eight.
Denison is now 9-4 while Transylvania drops to 5-10 overall and 0-4 on the road.
The Big Red and the Pioneers will continue their three-game set in Granville with the middle game of the series starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, followed by the third and final game also at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 27.
