No. 18 baseball finishes off two-game sweep of Transylvania

GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 26, 2022) – The No. 18 Denison University baseball team defeated Transylvania University 6-1 on a cold Saturday in Granville to finish off a two-game sweep of the Pioneers after also winning 11-1 in seven innings on Friday night. Game three of the series, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, March 27, has been canceled due to the weather conditions expected the rest of the weekend.

After Transylvania scored first in the top of the first inning, the combination of Taylor Perrett (2-1) and Trey Holland kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard the rest of the way by limiting them to just four hits over the final eight innings.

Perrett earned the start and pitched five innings allowing five hits, one run, two walks and five strikeouts before Holland earned the save by pitching four innings allowing one hit, no runs, no walks and eight strikeouts. Additionally, Holland pitched perfect 1-2-3 innings in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to close it out.

Offensively, Denison got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning as Danny Alvarez led off with a single up the middle, advanced to third on a single down the right field line by Josh Bohn and then scored thanks to a balk. Then, a sacrifice fly to left field by Eric Colaco scored Bohn to put the Big Red up for good at 2-1.

Alvarez then came up with a solo home run to left center field to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh before Denison added three insurance runs on a two-run double to right field by Jake Welsch and a sacrifice fly to center by Charlie Glennon in the bottom of the eighth.

Denison is now 10-4 while Transylvania dropped to 5-11.

Next up for Denison will be a big opportunity to make a statement at home against the No. 1 nationally-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Marietta College. The Big Red and the No. 1-ranked Pioneers, who are currently 13-2 on the season, will play starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, on the Big Red Baseball Field.
