INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 19, 2022) – The Denison University men's swimming & Diving team ran their streak of top-3 finishes at the NCAA Division III Championship to 15 after totaling 339.5 points at the four-day, 20 event championship at the IU Natatorium. Emory won the men's swimming & diving national championship with 427.5 points while Johns Hopkins (340 points) just edged out DU for second place by 0.5 points.
Saturday night's opening race was the 1,650 freestyle, which saw
Luke Landis earn All-American status by placing seventh in 15:20.70. Additionally,
Lucas Conrads (15:33.40) was 10th overall,
Sam Myaard (15:36.77) was 11th and
Lukas Gately (15:46.12) was 14th, giving the Big Red a total of 28 points for the event and cutting Emory's lead to 64 points at 349-285 at the time.
In the first prelim swim of the day in the morning session,
Trey Ike qualified for the A Final with a seventh-place time of 44.25 seconds. He then improved by three spots in the finals to take fourth while trying Denison's varsity record with a time of 43.81 seconds.
In the 200 backstroke,
Liam Picozzi finished 13th in the prelims with a time of 1:47.21 before tying for fifth (13th overall) in the B Final with a time of 1:47.29.
The 200 breaststroke would see
Richie Kurlich place ninth in 1:59.22 in the prelims before taking fifth (13th overall) in the B Final with a time of 1:58.88.
The championship was wrapped up by a third-place finish for Denison in the 400 freestyle relay. In the prelims,
Kyle Verstandig, Ike,
Patrick Daly and
Noah Houskeeper touched in fifth at 2:58.15 before Verstandig, Ike, Daly and Picozzi finished at 2:56.97 in the finals.
Over the course of the four-day championship, the Big Red racked up 30 All-American swims and 14 top-eight finishes. This is the 15th consecutive top-three national finish for the Denison men's program.
