Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Big Red drop overtime nailbiter at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio (February 9, 2022) – Playing in its final game before Senior Day, the Denison University women's basketball team went to overtime but came up short by a final score of 75-73 at Hiram College on Wednesday night.

Tied at 64-64 late in the fourth quarter, Hiram missed a jump shot and Denison's Gabby Elliott went for the defensive rebound, got fouled and went to the other end of the court to the free throw line with only three seconds left.

Elliott sank her second free throw attempt to give Denison a narrow one-point lead, but then Hiram got fouled itself on the other end with 0.3 seconds left, and like Denison, made its second free throw attempt to force overtime.

After Hiram scored the first four points of overtime, Hannah Wynn scored an and-one, and then Elliott made a great pass in transition to Ava Warcaba to put Denison up one at 70-69 with 3:11 on the clock.

Warcaba made a free throw to make it 71-69 with 2:52 left, and then she sank two free throws to break a tie and make it 73-71 Denison with 2:13 to go.

Tied at 73-73 with under a minute left in overtime, Denison would miss a 3-pointer, and then Hiram went to the free throw line with 21 seconds left to take a two-point lead at 75-73. During Denison's next possession, a tough shot in the lane gave the ball back to the Terriers, and then despite getting a defensive rebound with two seconds left, the Big Red would not have enough time left to get off a final shot attempt.

In the end, Denison was 19-for-24 from the free throw line and had four players score in double figures, had five players with seven or more rebounds, and had three players with four or more assists.

The Big Red also outrebounded the Terriers by 20 (54-34) overall and by 10 on the offensive glass (19-9), leading to a 15-8 advantage on second chance points.

Hiram, meanwhile was 18-for-22 from the foul line and took advantage of 12 steals on 19 Big Red turnovers to outscore Denison 17-4 on points off turnovers.

Warcaba led the Big Red in scoring with a career-high 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field and 7-for-9 shooting from the free throw line, and added eight rebounds.

Mikaila Carpenter recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 50 percent (5-10) from the field and 5-for-6 on free throws.

Elliott finished with 14 points, was 4-for-6 from the free throw line, and had seven rebounds and four assists.

Maddie Goodman scored 13 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists.

Isa Contreras contributed with eight points and seven rebounds, and Wynn had five assists and four rebounds while going 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.

Earlier in the game, Denison led 24-18 at halftime but had to withstand a 12-5 start to the second half for Hiram that made it 30-29 Terriers with seven minutes left in the third. The Big Red took back the lead on a layup by Elliott and then made it 33-30 on a jumper by Contreras with five and a half minutes left in the period.

Denison then took an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter up 48-40 after an offensive rebound and layup by Carpenter with only seconds on the clock, and then Carpenter started the fourth quarter with a jumper to make it a 10-point margin at 50-40.

Denison dropped to 7-12 overall and 5-7 in the North Coast Athletic Conference and fell to Hiram (7-14, 3-10) for the first time in the last nine matchups between the two teams dating back to the 2017-18 season.

This weekend, Denison returns home for Senior Day at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, against Kenyon College. In the first matchup between the Big Red and the Ladies earlier this season at Kenyon (Dec. 11), Denison came out on top by a final score of 66-59.
