HIRAM, Ohio (February 9, 2022) – A hook shot by senior
Freeman Brou propelled the Denison University men's basketball team to an 80-78 victory on the road over Hiram College on Wednesday night inside Price Gymnasium.
Tied at 78-78 with 18 seconds left, the Big Red took a timeout and Head Coach
Chris Sullivan set up a play from the sideline that led to Brou getting the matchup he wanted.
After the basket by Brou, Hiram called a timeout, had to go the length of the floor to tie it, and missed a contested layup with the clock winding down.
Three times in the final five minutes of the game, freshman
Ricky Radtke scored to put the Big Red up two, but each time he did so, Hiram had an answer on its next possession.
With 2:32 remaining, a 3-pointer by
Darren Rubin put Denison up 76-73, and then on the next play, and layup and a foul for Hiram put the Terriers at the free throw line with a chance to tie the game, but they missed the equalizer.
A layup by
John Faller with 1:25 left then made it 78-75 Denison before a 3-pointer by Hiram with 1:12 on the clock tied it and led to the thrilling ending for the Big Red.
In the first meeting this season between Denison and Hiram back on December 8 in Granville, the Big Red won by a total of 25 points (82-57) after shooting 49.3 percent from the field and limiting the Terriers to only 34.8 percent shooting. Rubin and Brou both scored 17 points in that matchup.
This time around, both teams shot 47 percent (Denison 47.8; Hiram 47.7) from the field in a game that featured eight ties and five lead changes. One big difference was the 21 turnovers for Hiram compared to 14 for Denison, which outscored the Terriers 25-12 in points off those turnovers.
Rubin led Denison with a game-high 24 points on five 3-pointers, his most points since scoring 24 back on November 21 against Willamette University, while Radtke finished with 12 points. Brou finished with nine points, eight rebounds and four steals; and
