GRANVILLE, Ohio (February 5, 2022) –
Darren Rubin scored a game-high 17 points and
Freeman Brou finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds as the Denison University men's basketball team came out on top by a final score of 70-58 during its Alumni Day, and during what was also its first game this season against Oberlin College.
In addition to his 17 points, Rubin would add seven rebounds and a season-high six assists while Brou's totals added up to his second straight double-double and the third overall of his senior campaign.
Ricky Radtke also approached double-double territory with 10 points and eight rebounds while
Will Hunter finished with five points and six boards. Additionally,
Kevin Cheng and
Tyler Miller chipped in with 11 and eight points, respectively.
Denison led 8-0 to start the game after a 3-pointer by Rubin before Oberlin took its only lead of the contest at 11-10 with 11 minutes to go in the first half.
An offensive rebound and layup by Miller on Denison's next possession made it 12-11, and the Big Red would never relinquish the lead the rest of the way despite Oberlin doing its best to stay within shouting distance.
The Big Red took their first double-digit lead of the game up 23-13 after a jumper by Radtke with 7:28 left before halftime, and then they led by as many as 17 points in the final minute of the first half (37-20) after a 3-pointer by Miller.
With seven minutes left to play, the Yeomen got to within single digits for the only time in the second half following an 11-0 run featuring three 3-pointers in a two-and-a-half-minute span. That turned an 18-point (52-34) margin into a seven-point (52-45) game.
Fortunately, the Big Red responded promptly with an 11-0 run themselves, ending with a transition layup by Brou assisted by Cheng to make it an 18-point game again at 63-45 with 3:35 left to play.
Denison dominated 42-25 on the glass and 12-2 on offensive rebounds, helping lead to a 20-point advantage (42-22) on points in the paint and a 12-0 advantage on second chance points.
The Big Red also finished the game a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, with half of those makes going to Cheng.
With its five-game losing streak now snapped, Denison improved to 7-11 overall on the season and got back to .500 in the North Coast Athletic Conference at 6-6. Oberlin, meanwhile, suffered its eighth straight loss and dropped to 5-15 and 3-11.
Next week, Denison will play at Hiram College at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9, before returning home for Senior Day at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, against Kenyon College.
