GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (February 26, 2022) – Denison University's five competitors in the 2022 NCAA Division III Diving Regional, hosted by Calvin College at the Venema Aquatic Center, closed out the weekend with strong showings, including three in the top-10 on the men's 1-meter board.
Just like he did on the men's 3-meter board on Friday,
Liam Simmons led the Big Red trio by finishing second on the 1-meter board on Saturday. Simmons finished with an 11-dive score of 462.30 points while Kenyon College's Israel Zavaleta was once again first with 521.45 points. Simmons had his highest score on his 10th dive, collecting 53.20 points on an inward 2 somersault tuck (404C).
After not scoring in his final three dives during the 3-meter competition on Friday,
Brendan Downey bounced back strong on the 1-meter board by finishing in sixth overall with 439.85 points. His highest point total of 55.20 points came via an inward 1 1/2 somersault pike (403B) on his ninth dive.
The final Denison competitor on the men's side,
Kristian Kowalski, made it three Big Red divers in the top-10 on the 1-meter board as he took 10th place with a total of 421.45 points. Kowalski's best dive was his seventh attempt, which saw a score 49.20 points on the same dive as Downey's best score, an inward 1 1/2 somersault pike (403B).
Just like she did on the women's 1-meter board on Friday,
Kerstyn Johnson finished in sixth place on the 3-meter board on Saturday. Johnson finished with an 11-dive score of 413.25 points, with her highest score of 43.20 points coming on her 11th and final dive, a back 1 1/2 somersault 1 1/2 twist free (523D).
Maggie Seftenberg, meanwhile, finished 13th with a total of 367.20 points and twice scored 39.60 points on a dive.
Simmons, Downey and Johnson have each unofficially advanced to the 2022 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, but the official qualifiers for the final meet of the season in Indianapolis, Indiana, will be announced by the NCAA next week.
