GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (February 25, 2022) – Five Denison University divers competed on day one of the 2022 NCAA Division III Regional hosted by Calvin College at the Venema Aquatic Center on Friday.
Liam Simmons,
Kristian Kowalski and
Brendan Downey were entered in the men's 3-meter dive while
Kerstyn Johnson and
Maggie Seftenberg dove in the women's 1-meter competition.
The regionals were kicked off by the men's 3-meter board, where Simmons earned second place after totaling an 11-dive score of 503.10 points. Simmons' best dive came on his sixth attempt, a forward 2 1/2 somersault pike (105B), where he was awarded a score of 55.20 points. Simmons joined Kenyon College's Israel Zavaleta (542.80 points) as the only two divers in the event to reach the 500-point threshold.
Kowalski finished in 14th place with a score of 413.35, and Downey was 27th with a score of 278.15. Kowalski's best dive came on his sixth attempt, an inward 2 1/2 somersault tuck (405C), where he was awarded a score of 56.70 points. Downey was awarded 56.40 points on his sixth dive, a forward 2 1/2 somersault pike (105B), which was the same dive as Simmons completed on his best attempt.
Johnson led the way on the women's 1-meter board as she finished in sixth place with an 11-dive score of 384.30 points. Seftenberg followed in 11th place with 376.70 points. On Johnson's fifth dive, she was awarded a score of 41.40 points on her back 1 somersault 1 1/2 twist free (5223D). For Seftenberg, her best dive came with her score of 42.00 points via her forward 2 1/2 somersault tuck (105C) on her sixth dive.
All five Denison divers will return on Saturday for the conclusion of the NCAA Division III Diving Regional. The men's 1-meter will take place at 12 p.m., followed by the women's 3-meter at 5:30 p.m.
