GRANVILLE, Ohio (February 12, 2022) – In what was the final home game of the 2021-22 season for the Big Red, senior
Freeman Brou scored a layup with only seven seconds left in overtime to help lead the Denison University men's basketball team to a 72-70 victory over Kenyon College during Senior Day.
In addition to Brou, it was Senior Day for,
Kevin Cheng,
Omar Elliott-Diab and
John Faller, who all started the game on Saturday, as well as student coach
Dashn White.
Brou scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the year, and added four assists, three steals and one block. Brou has now started in 42 of the 80 games in his career, and has totaled 621 points, 343 rebounds, 111 assists, 70 blocks and 51 steals.
Cheng finished with five points and six rebounds. He has now started in 54 of the 73 games in his career and has amassed 539 points, 188 rebounds, 131 assists, and 43 steals.
Eliott-Diab has appeared in 43 games in his career and has totaled 61 points and 56 rebounds.
Faller finished with four rebounds and three assists. He has appeared in 50 games in his career and has registered 186 points, 77 rebounds, 50 assists, 23 steals and 16 blocks.
White is a two-year letter winner from Columbus, Ohio, who has also spent two seasons as a student-coach for the Big Red.
Strong performances from the non-seniors for the Big Red on Saturday included
Darren Rubin with 15 points,
Ricky Radtke with 12 points, and
Will Hunter with eight points and six rebounds.
After leading by as many as 15 points (30-15) in the first half and then up 65-60 with 1:38 left to play, it took an extra five minutes for the Big Red to come out on top.
Rubin scored the first points of the overtime period with a 3-pointer assisted by
Scotty Dean over two minutes in, and then after Kenyon tied it with a three on its next possession, Brou scored a go-ahead layup on the assist by Radtke with 52 seconds left.
Kenyon again had the answer with a very tough layup on its next possession, leading to Brou's second game-winner this week, this time on the assist from Rubin with seven seconds to go.
Denison has now reached a season-long four-game winning streak while improving to 10-11 overall, 9-6 in the conference, and .500 at home (4-4), while Kenyon dropped to 2-21 overall, 0-16 in the conference and 0-11 on the road so far this season.
Denison will wrap up its 2021-22 regular season with a trio of road games next week, starting at the College of Wooster at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16, and followed by 6 p.m. on Friday, February 18, at Oberlin College. The Big Red will then end the regular season the next day on Saturday, February 19, at 3 p.m. at Allegheny College.
