GRANVILLE, Ohio (December 1, 2022) – The fifth-ranked Denison University men's swimming & diving team sits in fourth place through the first five events at the Fourth Annual Denison Invitational. No. 1-ranked Emory University (565 points) holds a 112.5-point lead over No. 7 Washington-St. Louis (452.5) in the team standings while No. 3 Johns Hopkins University (406.5) is third, followed by the Big Red (351).
Fifth-year senior
Richie Kurlich highlighted the night for the Big Red with a win and a new pool record in the 200 IM. In addition, for the second year in a row, sophomore
Lucas Conrads earned an NCAA Division III National "B" cut in the 500 freestyle while fellow-sophomore
Patrick Daly did so in the 200 IM.
In the first individual swimming final of the meet, the 500 freestyle, Conrads finished in fourth place with an NCAA Division III National "B" cut time of 4:29.15. That got the Big Red into the team standings for the first time with 84 points, which put them in fourth place behind Emory (213) in first, WashU (199) in second and Johns Hopkins (143) in third.
Kurlich then won the 200 IM and set a new pool record with a National "B" cut time of 1:47.10, breaking the previous pool record set by Bebe Wang (1:47.45) in 2019. In fourth place in the event also with a "B" cut time was Daly (1:48.67).
In the 50 freestyle, junior
Richie Stewart (20.82) finished seventh and senior
Aidan Lane (20.90) finished eighth.
The 400 medley relay closed out the night's finals as Denison's "A" team of sophomore
Chris Luus, sophomore
Gavin Jones, sophomore
Dhinal Weerasinghe and Daly finished sixth with a time of 3:20.64.
No diving took place on the men's side during the first day of competition.
Denison returns to the Trumbull Aquatics Center on Friday, December 2, for preliminaries at 10 a.m. with diving to follow at 12:30 p.m. Swimming finals will take place at 6 p.m.
