GAMBIER, Ohio (November 5, 2022) – Fifth-year senior
Richie Kurlich earned an NCAA Division III National "B" cut time in both the 100 and 200 butterfly events, but the No. 3 Denison University men's swimming & diving suffered a 223-67 loss at No. 2 Kenyon College on Saturday in Gambier, Ohio.
The 200 medley relay started the meet off as Denison's top group of
Chris Luus,
Elijah Venos,
Josh Song and Kurlich finished second with a time of 1:32.70.
In the first individual event of the meet, the 1000 freestyle,
Tyler Distenfeld (9:51.57) and
Lucas Conrads (9:52.39) finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth place before
Ryan Foreback (1:45.79) and
Sam Myaard (1:45.92) finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 200 freestyle.
Luus took third place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.13 seconds while Venos was third in the 100 breaststroke at 58.13 seconds.
Kurlich earned Denison's only win of the day with a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly at 1:49.30 before
Aidan Lane took second in the 50 freestyle at 21.37 seconds. The win for Kurlich was also his second NCAA "B" cut time in the 200 butterfly over the last two weeks.
Richie Stewart (47.68) and
Patrick Daly (48.00) finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 100 freestyle while
Nick Settembrine (2:00.89) and
Patrick Madden (2:01.08) finished in fifth and sixth in the 200 backstroke and
Franceso Assalone (2:10.36) was third in the 200 breaststroke.
Distenfeld (4:50.14) and Myaard (4:51.09) finished in third and fourth place, respectively, in the 500 freestyle before Kurlich took second in the 100 butterfly with another NCAA "B" cut time of 48.46 seconds.
In the final individual swim, the 400 IM,
Connor Brown (4:12.92) and Conrads (4:13.40) finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth place before Denison's 200 freestyle relay team of Luss,
George Wang,
Owen Leary and
Dhinal Weerasinghe finished fourth at 1:27.60.
Kristian Kowalski took second place in the one-meter dive with a score of 264.22 while
Nick Fogle was fifth at 245.65, and then Kowalski finished fourth in the three-meter dive at 234.53.
The Big Red will return to the pool on Friday, November 11, at Ohio State University.
