GRANVILLE, Ohio (November 19, 2022) – The Denison University men's basketball team put up 50 points in the first half and broke its program-record for 3-point field goals in a single game, but for the second game in a row at home, the Big Red came up short in overtime, this time falling 98-90 in double overtime against Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday inside Livingston Gymnasium.
It was a dominant first half for Denison (2-3 overall), which doubled up Carnegie Mellon (3-0) at 40-20 after a 3-pointer by
Chase Ouellette with under five and a half minutes left until halftime.
Denison then took a 15-point (50-35) lead into the break after a late 3-pointer by
Darren Rubin, which was only one of 12 3-pointers (12-for-22) in the first half for the Big Red.
Then in the second half, a 3-pointer by
Nick Heath made it 70-56 Denison with nine and a half minutes in regulation, but from there, the Tartans began to chip away and limited the Big Red to only 20 points the rest of the way.
Over the next five and a half minutes, Carnegie Mellon went on a huge 15-2 run to get to within one of Denison at 72-71 with four minutes left before a jumper by Rubin made it 74-71 with 3:41 remaining in regulation.
Less than two minutes later, the Tartans took their first lead of the game (75-74) since it was 7-4, and then a fastbreak layup for CMU after a miss from three by Denison made it 77-74 with a minute and a half left.
Then in the final seven seconds of regulation, a 1-for-2 trip to the free throw line by CMU allowed Denison to tie the game and force overtime on a tip-in by
Ricky Radtke.
Denison came out firing in the first overtime and used back-to-back 3-pointers by
Tyler Miller and
Scotty Dean, followed by a steal and a transition layup by Rubin to take an 86-79 lead two minutes into extra time. However, in the final 12 seconds of the period, Carnegie Mellon took advantage of an offensive rebound to tie it at 87-87, and then a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer by Denison forced double overtime.
In the second overtime, CMU started with a jumper and added two free throws to take a 91-87 lead just one minute in, and then a step-back 3-pointer by Miller 15 seconds later would turn out to be the last basket of the day for Denison.
It was a three-point CMU lead at 93-90 entering the final minute of double overtime when a miss from three for Denison led to a layup for the Tartans with only 30 seconds left, and then after another miss from three for the Big Red, CMU sank both of its free throws with 15 seconds left to make it a seven-point game (97-90) and effectively put it out of reach.
Denison finished only 1-for-5 (20 percent) in the second overtime which each attempt coming from 3-point range.
For the game, Denison made a program-record 19 3-pointers on what was also a program-high of 49 attempts (38.8 percent). Denison's previous program records for 3-point makes and attempts in a single game were 17 makes (4 times) and 40 attempts (1/7/17).
Four players finished with at least three 3-pointers for the Big Red, led by Miller with 22 points on six 3-pointers and Dean with 16 points on four triples. Rubin was next with 15 points on three 3-pointers while Ouellette added 11 points and was 3-for-3 from three.
Lastly, Radtke finished with 11 points and had five assists while
Will Hunter scored seven points and added six assists and six rebounds. Both Miller and Dean led the team with eight boards.
Denison's current four-game homestand will continue with Otterbein University at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22, before Thanksgiving Break begins.
