Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Strong second half helps push Denison past Otterbein

GRANVILLE, Ohio (November 22, 2022) – The Denison University men's basketball team outscored Otterbein University 49-29 in the second half to earn a 76-66 win in nonconference action over the Cardinals on Tuesday night inside Livingston Gymnasium.

After hitting a program-record 19 3-pointers in the previous game, Denison (3-3 overall) struggled to get it going in this one, shooting only 1-for-14 (7.14 percent) from three in the first half.

In the second half, however, the Big Red shot over 50 percent (16-for-31) from the field and used some timely 3-pointers to take over the lead and hand Otterbein (3-1) its first loss of the season.

Starting with Denison down by nine points at 53-44 with nine and a half minutes left to play, the deciding run of the game was an 18-2 stretch that made it a seven-point Big Red lead at 62-55.

That run started with seven straight points from Cameron Smith before a 3-pointer by Tyler Miller got the Big Red to within one at 55-54 with 7:25 remaining, and then a 3-pointer by Scotty Dean on the next possession gave Denison its first lead since the score was 11-10.

Denison then capped off the run with an and-one by Dre Rodgers with five and a half minutes left to play, and then Otterbein never got back to within one possession of the Big Red the rest of the way.

Denison was led by Ricky Radtke's super-efficient double-double as he finished with a new career-high 26 points and 11 rebounds on 10-for-13 shooting from the field and a 6-for-7 mark from the free throw line.

Next with 17 points also on 6-for-7 shooting from the free throw line was Darren Rubin, while Smith added 11 points on 4-for-5 shooing overall and Miller finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

In addition, the Big Red were 14-for-16 from the free throw line in the second half, and outrebounded Otterbein 12-4 on the offensive glass, leading to a 16-2 advantage on second chance points.

Denison will return to action after Thanksgiving Break to wrap up its current four-game homestand with the start of North Coast Athletic Conference action as the Big Red will host the DePauw University Tigers at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30.
