AKRON, Ohio (October 7, 2021) – Denison University men's swimming & diving sits in second place after one of three sessions at the Akron Zips Classic at Ocasek Notarium. The Big Red totaled 362 points on Friday night. Youngstown State University sits in first place with 423.5 points while Xavier University is third at 269.5.
Session 1 - Friday, Oct. 7 - 5 p.m.
The new 2022-23 season was kicked off by senior
Brendan Downey winning the 3-meter dive with a score of 240.00 while fellow-senior
Kristian Kowalski (232.25) was third. Freshman
Nick Fogle (181.35) and junior
Cam Friedauer (174.50) finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively, to help give Denison a 61-57 lead over YSU after the first event.
The first of two relays during day one saw Denison's group of sophomore

Richie Kurlich and sophomore
Dhinal Weerasinghe finish third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:23.57. In fifth place with a time of 3:26.78 was junior Nick Settembrine, sophomore
Elijah Venos, senior
Eric Chimes and freshman
George Wang.
In the 500 freestyle, sophomore
Tyler Distenfeld finished fourth with a time of 4:39.68 while behind him in fifth place was senior
Luke Landis with a time of 4:42.47.
Next was the 200 IM, which saw sophomore
Patrick Daly earn Denison's best individual finish in the pool of the day with a second-place time of 1:52.37. Finishing in seventh and eighth place with times of 1:56.47 and 1:56.71, respectively, were Narcelles and fellow-sophomore
Max Soja.
In the 50 freestyle, senior
Aidan Lane was fourth at 21.44 seconds while Weerasinghe was sixth at 21.61 seconds.
Finishing off the night for the Big Red with a win in the 800 freestyle relay was Daly, Narcelles, Distenfield and Weerasinghe, who worked together to win the race with a time of 6:54.16 over YSU (6:54.88). Finishing in fourth at 6:59.23 was the sophomore trio of
Lucas Conrads,
Connor Brown and
Elijah Venos along with Landis.
The Akron Zips Classic will be closed out on Saturday, October 8, with two sessions beginning at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
